The Dynon ADSB - IN solution is expensive overkill for Australia because we use 1090 ES and there are no add on services like weather, nota so etc. that make the Dynon unit a value proposition. Can anyone recommend some simple ADSB - IN solution? We had a fatal air to air just near me this week and I’m therefore revisiting the question of ADSB IN.

This is much the same situation as in europe. I have a Pilot Aware Rosetta unit which does this. Price is 208 GBP. This used to be a build-it-yourself Rasberry Pie unit with a USB TV receiver tuned to 1090 MHz, but it grew to a more ready built and robust unit. Seems to work okay. It also shows mode C and mode S without ADSB out but cant show position for these, they only get a rough distance. It also has its own radio similar to flarm but since few aircraft here in sweden have pilot aware this is not very useful. It interfaces fine with skyview using the flarm rs232 protocol.

Sunfish - what I like about the Dynon ADSB IN is that it not only shows a ‘target’ is it also displays what height it’s above & below, what direction it’s moving in relation to you & if it’s climbing & descending, with arrows & some numbers on the display. On top of that it shows the call sign (N number in USA) eg ABC, how cool is that ? In my case I want to know what the ‘target’ is doing, not that it’s just there. That situational awareness is something I’m prepared to pay for, YMMV. Low cost units normally don’t do that.
Here our CASA & Airservices are, & have been, working on a lower cost solution (just published again in their newsletter in the last 2 weeks) for VFR ops however I’m betting they’ll make it mandatory figment (& maybe transponders too) for ALL aircraft - in my mind it doesn’t make sense to have exemptions, as we do for Transponders here, for some aircraft & not others. This is paragraph is just a basic layout of the situation as it stands right now.

Well, at the current price....or even a higher one it now seems to makes an excellent value proposition, I am sure you would agree.

Having been one of the first ADS-B out GA owners down here, I have long been a proponent of it ..... so maybe I am a bit biased. The likes of Dick, Bill and others really did hurt our chances of having more sooner, but hey....you saw all that debate years ago, so its not news to you.

Just buy it and you will forget the price soon enough.

Heck....I will happily sell you one.
