I have a dual HDX installation. During a long cross country flight yesterday while on autopilot I noticed I was descending at a rapid rate. Upon pushing the AP disconnect switch on the control stick, then other panel buttons, I realized that the screen was locked up. The right screen continued to function but the autopilot did not. I performed the 1-3-5 button reboot and after the screen returned to normal function.

Do you have a USB stick connected? There have been some funny things alleged to have been USB stick created....but that is rumour only.

I assume you meant 1-2-5 to reboot ;-)

Not so much rumor, actually - I've seen it first hand in my aircraft. I know a few others have too. It appears to be isolated to Sandisk USB sticks, and only a couple sizes of them. I shipped one of my offending sticks to Dynon for post-mortem about a year ago upon isolating and confirming the failure.

Yes, I always have a Sandisk Cruzer Fit 32Gb micro USB connected to both screens with the chart data files. I’ve been doing this for a long time, previously with a Classic and Touch screens. HDX for over a year. First time this has happened.

Do you recall exactly which type?

I have a few customers with them.

This would be a new issue, as the previously identified issues with some sticks was limited to hanging up while booting, IIRC. Are you guys now saying that you have had SV freeze up *in flight* depending upon which USB drive you have inserted? (Also, is this HDX, SV Classic, or both?).

Yes, as stated, using a SanDisk Cruzer Fit 32Gb my left screen locked up in flight during autopilot control of the aircraft on a long cross country flight. The screen that locked up contained 1/2 engine and 1/2 flight displays. The right screen had only the map displayed and it kept working. After the screen rebooted everything functioned normally for the rest of the flight which was the last one of the day.

Yes, it locked up in flight on me - when I tried to save a screenshot twice, and once when I was pulling up a sectional view from the stick. It has something to do with Skyview accessing the wonky stick and getting "stuck" due to problems with read/write on the stick. I don't know the particulars of the read/write function but that's when the problem would show up.

Agreed - though it's difficult to pin down. It's certainly a small number of total cases, though it seems all or most of them have occurred with the Sandisk 16GB stick. I simply quit using that variety and have not have any other problems.

Yeah, but assuming the Sandisk sticks are operating within spec, there's nothing to say that any other brand won't cause similar problems. In my experience, albeit somewhat limited with these sorts of devices, things like this can often be caused by a device that's operating within the spec but *right at the edge of it*, and the other side is doing the same (or not expecting timing to be so tight, etc.), and boom...they stop working together.

Also, it may not matter what brand you buy...at least in years past, all the flash card memories were made by the same company, and just rebranded.
