2 Screen Feedback

For christmas, i gave myself a second screen, an SVT. thus, after flying 3 years in 40/40/20 layout with a single screen, i am still trying to figure things out with a screen #2. Here is some feedback.

1. SV has a feature of sharing settings which is convenient sometimes and annoying at others. For example, I have an SVT and an old SV. For the SVT, i have enabled some touch-only items such as FPL and INFO. Because that setting is shared with the old SV screen and the old SV screen is not touch, nothing is displayed in those info items which is a bit of a shame.

However, beyond touch info items, I can see wanting to have certain Map info items on screen #1 and different Map info items on #2. I can see many scenarios for this. on screen #1, i always want PFD visible so the MAP would at most be in 50% layout. Thus, maybe in 50% layout, i want fewer MAP info items displayed. However, on screen #2 i mostly have it in 100% layout so i have the space to afford more Map info items to be displayed.

2. Another example, i wanted to move the Map knob to the left on the copilot screen so it is closer to the pilot. however, the change is global and moves the Map knob to the left on the pilot screen, too which is not what i wanted on the pilot screen.

3. One possible layout i had in mind was keeping screen #2 in the 20% EMS and 80% MAP. However, if i hit INFO or FPL, the layout changes to 50% EMS and 50% MAP, which is odd and annoying to me. I think it would be better to stay 20% EMS. Maybe then do 40% MAP and 40% INFO.

4. It would be nice to have a 50% MAP and 50% CHART or airport diagram option. Currently, you can only have either/or and have to toggle between them.

5. DECLUTTER, please! We need it! I thought having a 100% MAP would help but it helped only slightly. Between airspace, airports, obstacles, traffic, etc. etc. etc. there is a LOT going on. I am trying to find a set of settings to help. Also, like with #1 above, I want these settings screen specific. A declutter toggle would be best though.

6. Let's say I have 100% PFD on screen #1, i notice that the MAP menu is disabled, which is slightly annoying. I can think of many scenarios where I would still like to do some function in the MAP submenus without having to see the MAP. I would still like to view the FLT PLAN, get airport INFO, TUNE COM, etc. even though the MAP is not visible.

I would be interested in hearing any others who have had similar experiences, advice or tips. Also, thanks for all the hard work for the latest v12 update!

FWIW I set my screens as follows:

Pilot Screen: 50% PFD, 50% MAP
Co-Pilot Screen: 50% PFD, 50% EMS

Before engine start I hit SWAP so now I have PFD and EMS for engine start, taxi and takeoff in front of me. Once airborne and leaving the airport area, I press SWAP so now I have PFD and MAP in front of me for navigation and ADS-B traffic. Anytime I want to check an engine parameters I press SWAP and the EMS page replaces the MAP page while the PFD appears to remain untouched.

Just before landing I press SWAP and the EMS page replaces the MAP page for landing, taxiing and engine shut down. The added advantage is that it gives a pseudo portrait layout which replicates what is in Boeing cockpits.

After just under 140hrs of flight time with the SkyView. this method works very well for me.

I appreciate the ability to be able to choose left or right knob for full screen map control. But I agree with the OP that it should have been a per-display setting. My aircraft partner prefers to fly PIC from the right seat, whereas I prefer the left seat. So we will have to flip the setting back and forth, depending on situation.

My previous method was to set up the right screen with 80% map, 20% EMS, just so the map knob was on the left.

Galin, thanks for that suggestion. that layout makes sense to me. i will have to give it a try. it sure would be nice to have an external SWAP button on the stick or a dedicated button on the panel!!!

It also replicates the certified G500 setup with PFD and MAP both in front. I will see if i can get used to the 50% EMS which i have never been a fan of and got little to no use.

bobl, did you see my #3 point above in the 80% MAP and 20% EMS layout? does it bother you that the EMS zooms to 50% if you hit INFO or FPL etc?

I do the same set up as Galin in my RV-10. On the co-pilot side I keep the EMS on the right side of the display all the time. The left co-pilot display is typically PDF unless cross country. This is where I look at the IFR/VFR charts and Map on long range to see the ADSB weather feed and such. When doing this I might shift to 20% EMS display, but then go back to 50% EMS display when done. I've tried different set ups but always come back to this.

I find the swap feature handy when I have a pilot in the right seat not familiar with flat screen flying.

Not really, it was something I got used to. At the point I'm hitting INFO/NRST/FPL, etc, I'm focused on the screen popping up.
I do like having the 100% map screen, though, because then the popup becomes 50% INFO/NRST/FPL and 50% MAP, which is more useful. Having the INFO/NRST/FPL pop up on the far right 50% was far more annoying.

I had started flying 80% PFD, 20% EMS on left, 80% MAP, 20% EMS on right, with custom EMS widget definitions to shrink the widget color bar widths and dimensions to optimize the 20% EMS layout. I find the available default widget selections to be too bulky for the 20% screen. But the new left MAP knob selection improves the right screen greatly.

Try leaving the display in the mode that has the SWAP function above one of the buttons. When you change something that removes the SWAP function, and you finish what you needed to do, press BACK until the SWAP function appears again. In other words make this setup (SWAP function displayed) kind of like your "default" button setting. A pseudo dedicated SWAP button on the display.

Play with your EMS page layout (layout editor) until it is how you like it. After a few hours I think you will like it. It works very well for me.
