Adding Approach Plates to Skyview

I really like my SVmap270 in my Skyview. I am IFR rated, but my only navigation system is my Skyview touch. It gives me all of the simplicity and functionality I need for most of my flights. Occasionally, it would be nice to have a GPS approach plate available for a destination so that I could use the IAF, and FAF as waypoints for a simple VFR approach. I can do that with my SVmap, but I have to build it into a flight plan and still use the SVmap. It's comforting to hear the little girl tell me that I am approaching a way point. I would hope that with SA's approach plates loaded on a stick, this would be much easier, but I don't want to loose the SVmap that I am so accustomed to, and keep current on the 28 day cycle. It would be nice to hear from folks who have subscriptions to the SA IFR suite, in hope of getting a idea of what to expect in making the change. Thanks for your help and I look forward to your comments.

An iPad and SV's wifi (USB) dongle would do the trick. Add the approach to your foreflight route and then send it to SV. Plus, the iPad gives you a backup for paper charts, and GPS, etc.

I'm not sure what your reticence is to get the SA charts and plates. It's only what, like $100 a year? If you don't like them, you'd have them for a year and then you can bail.

And you have to "keep current" with the 28 day cycle *anyway*, even if you only download Dynon's data, so just do both at the same time (or keep one USB stick in the plane and another in the computer all the time, and swap every 28 days).

SA's plates are georeferenced, too, so you see where you are on the approach. The one thing missing from SV, of course, is being able to flight plan a DP/transition/IAP as a complete segment of a FP, a la a 430 or other certified GPS navigator.

Hey Steve, thanks for your comments. I guess I just need to "buy it and try it". I was hoping that it would give me seamless approach fix flight plans: Like procedure turn inbound, IAF, FAF, MAP, and missed approach/holds, including the arrival announcements from our little girl in the Skyview. If I just get an approach georeferenced plate, and still need to build the flight plan, I may just as well load the plates on my iPad, and use it with my Skyview data. It only takes a few minutes to load a flight plan using the fixes in the Dynon database, but if I could merely select an approach, like (KXYZ GPS RWY 23) and get a flight plan loaded, it would be fantastic.

Yeah, SV doesn't do that, but it would sure be a nice feature to have. It would mean adding the ability to parse and load approach/transition/departure ARINC records, as well as get them from the DB and add them to the FP, so I don't think it's trivial, but perhaps they'll consider adding that capability in the future.

N.B. That will NOT make SV a GPS navigator suitable for IFR flight!!!

I really don't care about georeferenced positioning on the approach plate, I like just using the Dynon map, but getting the waypoints loaded in sequence would be wonderful.

BTW...I don't fully understand the intention of this:

I could use the IAF, and FAF as waypoints for a simple VFR approach.

Can you explain? Why would you use these instead of doing the standard entry to a pattern if you're VFR?

I use SA stuff and do all the things you want to do without difficulty or compromising the Dynon SV map display.

I don't understand not wanting to use geo-referencing using the approach plates. Using the geo-referencing is like cheating - it's everything you ever wanted in terms of steering the airplane around the sky following some procedure. I call it the Wizard, as in Follow the Yellow Brick Road in Wizard of Oz. Jusr follow the Yellow Brick Road.

If you're patient, SA usually have a half price sale once a year around Black Friday, or Xmas. I think the last one i bought 2 years for $99. That's a complete no-brainer, since buying 3 Sectionals and 1 TAC chart twice a year costs more than that and you get all the rest of the country, and all the Approach Plates and Airport Diagrams for nothing as a bonus.

My wish is the Dynon dongle would start picking up Android stuff so I could link Skyvector, Avare, FltPlan.com info into Skyview.

Hey Steve, In nice weather, my wife and I typically fly 4 or 5 days a week. Usually early morning breakfast runs to airports within a hour of our home. Often these weekday flights will end at small, non towered airports with no other traffic in the area. It is very satisfying to make a practice approach using my Skyview, and approach plate fixes. Sure, I'm looking out the windshield, and using the plate as a guide, with a landing at the end. It's fun, good practice, and reassuring to see just how fantastic all of these bells and whistles are, when you actually get to see them for yourself. Try it sometime........Tom
