ADS-B in Dynon vs. Avidyne

I have an Avidyne IFD 540 and a Skytrax MLB100 receiver for ADS-B in. The Skytrax 100 has failed. I have purchased a full Dynon system including ADS-B in/out and AIRINC 429 (not yet installed) to be connected to the 540. The question is whether to replace the Skytrax 100 with the 200 which will give me two ADS-B in’s installed in the aircraft? Also, will the Dynon installation with ADS-B, in connected to the 540 give me the same information on the 540 as the Skytrax 200?

The answer to the first question is, it's entirely up to you. The second question might be better answered by Avidyne. The only thing I'm aware of that an IFD shares with Skyview is basic nav data, but someone else with first hand experience might have better information on that. I'd also like more explanation of what you mean by "full Dynon system."

Since you posted this in the Certified forum, I have to ask if there's an STC that actually allows this installation.

By Dynon system I mean, Skyview HDX, comm, transponder, ads-b in/out, airing 429, gps, EMS, D30, and various other options of less importance. The Dynon STC AML includes my aircraft and the installation of all the components I’ve mentioned.

So the question is really what ADS-B data the Dynon may give you into the 540, compared to what the Skytrax 200 might give, and the answer to that would tell you whether you want to bother with installing the Skytrax? Is that the gist? I would again lean toward asking Avidyne that question. Skytrax hasn't been discussed much around here other than noting the 100 model displayed less traffic, probably because it was 978 Mhz only. I'm guessing Avidyne would have better info along those lines.

I'm assuming the free upgrade Avidyne is offering for the 100B wouldn't fix the current problem with yours.

Out of curiosity, what aircraft do you have? Who's doing the install?

The other thought is who cares about feedeing ADS-b into the 540? The SkyView HDX is a far superior platform to integrate ADS-B information. The 540, via the ARINC, is your TSO certified GPS navigator, flight plan displayed on the HDX moving map and PDF HSI. The HDX is your view of the world around you.

But, no reason not to do both if you want to spend the money.

Pretty sure it's just a software upgrade to 200 capability, but who knows? Come back if you want to discuss wiring. I like doing that stuff when I have the time.

I wouldn’t worry about the 540 but do get the WiFi dongles for the Dynon.

The 540 now supports ADSB over WiFi with SOME devices (the Dynon and the Sentry don’t work for example because they are the extended ADSB data) but I have to believe at some point Avidyne will update this.

Either way I’ve never missed not having ADSB on the Avidyne.

I have the 540 and one HDX screen. I have Dynon ADSB In for the HDX and I HAD the Skytrax 100 ADSB In for the 540 since it already existed there when I installed the HDX. The Skytrax 100 seems to have crapped out but I don't miss it. The HDX is a superior place to see traffic and weather information anyway. I also do have a Stratus 2 portable connected to the 540 and an iPad so I do have a second ADSB In source and can mess around with Foreflight if I want. I don't find it necessary though and there are flights where I don't have the iPad mounted. The HDX really does it all. I decided not to spend any money troubleshooting the Skytrax 100 and have left it for dead. Haha

HDX is where you really want to see the traffic, just go with the Dynon ADSB-472 receiver and be done with it. There's little value to be had by displaying traffic on a second screen to be included in your scan.
