Revisiting this discussion as I now upload software version 17.4: Do I need to update the transponder like I did in October for 17.3?
You should not have to update the transponder again after loading version 17.4.0. There was not an update for it included in this version, only in the prior 17.3.0 version.
I updated my HDX to 17.4 yesterday. I checked everything was 'Ready' on the network status and then went to the transponder setup. I was met with a red instruction, telling me to power cycle the transponder. I pulled and reset the CB. It did its thing and then everything came good on the status report after less than a minute.

As an aside, all the serial inputs/outputs worked normally.

As another aside, during the update I got a 100% report on the 'Screen something or other' just a short while into the update. It said not to turn off the power. After quite a long time the same screen was still there and nothing seemed to be happening. Eventually I turned off power and then turned it back on again. The system continued to update and all was well. I don't know if the 'freeze' is meant to happen or whether it was just me. All the time during the update my aircraft battery was being charged, so absolutely no chance of low voltage causing the 'freeze'. Just putting this out as information because, as I said, the update did continue normally.
Paul, this is considered normal, though we're still working on eliminating all of the scenarios where it may "hang" at 100% like that. Others have reported similar things randomly and have rebooted like you did and it finishes the process. The text below the percentage status really should be changed to say that it's safe to reboot once it reaches that point.

Just for the avoidance of confusion, I didn't update to 17.3.0. At the time there were too many comments for my liking about issues (such as ADSB/transponder) so I decided to let sleeping dogs lie. 17.4.0 seems to be okay but the UK weather is not letting me put it to the test :)

Thank you for the confirmation that it is okay to proceed once it gets to 100% (+ a bit to make sure it's not doing things in the background). I didn't know it required a reboot at that stage. Maybe the text should include 'Reboot if it does not do so automatically'. I'm pleased it did all go well but I have to admit that I was a bit concerned my turning it off at that stage would muck things up with half an update.

It does say it's safe to reboot, but the screen goes blank and you're sitting there wondering what to do. Eventually, I remove power and reboot as usual. Then it starts another load process, after which it again says ok to reboot. This time the system seems to load normally. Same on older and newer HDX.
