Reading up on the soon to be required ADS-b, Am I missing something about GPS WAAS required to meet the ADS-B in & out? If so does the Dynon Mode-S transponder & ADS-B in Require the GPS WAAS??  :-?

To meet the 2020 mandate for ADS-B "out" you will need a certified WAAS GPS receiver. To simply have ADS-B out so you can get full service ADS-B "'in" you just need any GPS. I am currently using the Skyview GPS to support "out" functions and as a result get full "in" services.

I intend to upgrade GPS source for the ADS-B "out" function by the mandate in 2020, by which time I expect (hope) there to be some much cheaper options.

Like, say, an upgrade to the Dynon GPS receiver/antenna :)

A certified GPS position source will be required for ADS-B OUT after 2020-01-01. Until then, non-certified GPS position for ADS-B OUT is acceptable. Dynon Avionics' SV-GPS-250 is a non-certified GPS position source.

There are certified GPS position sources available now, but Dynon Avionics expects that more reasonably priced certified GPS position sources will become available as the large market for 2020 ADS-B OUT compliance gets closer.

So how exactly do you have it wired? Did you split the serial line from the Dynon GPS and run one to the ADSB unit or does it come from the Skyview to the ADSB unit via another path?

The ADSB 470 connects to the Skyview system via serial data. It picks up the GPS data by talking to Skyview. Do not wire the GPS to the ADS 470. This is as shown in the instalaltion manual.

The OUT in the SkyView system is our Transponder, not our ADS-B module, and OUT is what wakes up the ground stations so your IN can get all the data.

If you have our transponder and the SV-GPS-250, SkyView automatically routes this data to the transponder to provide non-certified ADS-B out data to the transponder. No extra wires are needed.

If you have a certified GPS in the plane, you can wire this directly to the transponder to get compliant ADS-B out. This is described in the install manual.

I'm planning my panel right now. If I were to use the FreeFlight 1203C WAAS/GPS in place of the SV-GPS-250 right now, would I have the same navigation/moving map/magenta course line, etc. functions, but be compliant with the 2020 ADS-B Out requirements? Is this even possible? Difficult topic to get your head around. Thanks.

That GPS would get connected to the transponder directly and would provide its GPS position for ADS-B out functionality only. It has a proprietary data format that only the transponder understands, so it can't be used as a SkyView GPS source. Even if you could use it for both, using it that way is iffy as the whole point of having the certified GPS connected to the certified transponder directly is so you have an end-to-end certified ADS-B path. Injecting SkyView into that line, even if only as a receiver, might not be compliant (you're into gray area here, admittedly).

Most people that don't have an IFR GPS on board that can get the data "for free" are generally waiting a few years before thinking about a compliant GPS because those pucks are thousands of dollars. In the meantime, you'll still get identical traffic and weather from the system until Jan 1, 2020. We hope that the market will produce less expensive solutions as the dates get closer. 6 years is a long time - to put that in context, 6 years ago, SkyView hadn't even been born yet! :)

Point of clarification, please.

I have a Garmin 430W, and GTX327 transponder. If I get the Dynon ADSB module is there any way to get traffic info with this arrangement? I have two 10" Skyview systems along with an ARINC429 module...

What other options might there be?

Thanks!

Wouldn't the SkyView / ADS-B module combination act the same as Foreflight / Stratus combination for displaying traffic and weather data? The 327 "wakes up" the ADS-B ground station and the reply is viewed via the SkyView module / display instead of a Foreflight / Stratus combination. Or is the 327 not ADS-B compatible at all?

Interesting idea.

OK, the 327 is NOT ADS-B compatible and there is no upgrade to make it compatible. This combination will not work.
