ADSB updates

While on a flight the other day to KSAT i was checking the weather on route and observed that the weather information being displayed under info was steadily getting older and was more than an hour old when I landed. I had good ADSB coverage the entire trip and I have the new dual band receiver. Why doesn't the weather information update periodically?

It should, and an hour is a while. Where are you in the US? Did you happen to have the weather layer on and notice if the NEXRAD imagery was updating? (it has its own widget in the lower left of the map that tells you wx age/status)

I agree it should update more often. Yes I was observing the widget and the update times would vary but always every few minutes and I dont ever recall it being more than 10. I am in the southern part of texas and we have excellent ADSB coverage here. This is not the first instance that I have observed this, just the one that I actually took serious note of. The weather I was observing was at an international airport SAT and it was in the morning hours with the weather improving. Additionally there was some stormy weather depicted on the radar images and they were changing as would be expected.

How far away from the airport you were looking at were you? ADS-B does not update the METARS for all airports all over the USA. It only updates all the ones closest to you and then only bigger ones far away. The type of tower you are closest to defines how far away you get things. There are four tower types. Things are complicated ;)

The AIM does an excellent job describing ADS-B services (FIS-B and TIS-B). Starts on page 4[ch8722]5[ch8722]7 of the latest AIM and is continued on 7-1-10. Covers all the topics such as where METARS can be received (Table 7-1-2)

My trip was 200 statute miles. The weather never updated that I saw. The last time I looked I was about 30 miles out from the airport and was receiving ATIS so I didn't need it anymore. SAT is a major airport so I would be surprised if that was the issue. I'll take a look at the AIM to see if there is a clue there.
