Airport Diagram Feature Request

I have done this more than once, so i thought i should post it. Upon landing, it would be great if there were an easier way to display the airport diagram. This assumes one has the SA airport diagrams on the USB stick of course.

More than once, i have landed to press the MAP button expecting the airport diagram to toggle on, but it says "No chart selected" message instead. Then you have to go back, back, MAP, INFO, tab a few times over to CHARTS, usually the airport diagram is the first, hit VIEW. phew. This is while busy with the ground controller, clearing the taxi hold short line, completing the after landing check list, etc. etc.

This would be an easy improvement, i would think. Thanks!

On the ground, press and hold the MAP knob for 2 seconds. It will pop up the airport diagram for the airport you are at.

Hmmm, i dont think this was ever documented? I just tried to find a reference to the 2second button hold in the latest v14 pilot's guide revision. Well, this is good to know then. I will check it out next time i am able!

All i see is this on page 7-62:

To quickly return to the last chart that was viewed:
[ch61623] With the normal map page displayed, press (click) and hold the joystick knob for 1/2
second.
o When you are within 300 feet AGL of at an airport with an available diagram,
that airport diagram is displayed instead of the most recently viewed chart.
Strangely, i would think the second option would work. I have tried it more than once holding the knob while on the ground at an airport. However, i have only ever gotten the "No chart selected" message. Interesting. I will be testing this out further then.

That is the documentation for the feature.

You do need to be moving slowly on the airport surface for this to trigger. If you're still doing 20 knots down the runway, it will assume you are in flight and try and grab the last approach plate used. You of course also need to be at an airport that has a runway diagram.

I got to playing with this on the ground. I am not sure if there is a bug here or not. I cant get the 2s MAP button push to work at all. Are you sure it is for 2 seconds or is this the same feature i excerpted from the manual above with the 1/2 second button push?

As far as the 1/2 s button push, it keeps giving me "No Chart SLCTD" message. No airport diagram in the simplest case. Airplane on the ground at the airport. Power on SV. Push MAP button for 1/2s to 10s, i keep getting "No Chart SLCTD". Instead if you have to go to INFO, tab over to CHARTS, hit VIEW. Then i get the airport diagram, so no problem loading the chart.

Strangely, even after viewing the airport diagram and going back to MAP view, pressing the MAP button again to toggle back to the airport diagram also gives me "No Chart SLCTD". There does not seem to be much consistency here.

This is pretty much what i have been seeing since the very beginning. I just have never focused on debugging the issue. In prior past, it's been doing this under high workload talking to a controller, etc.

This is all while on the ground. It should be simple to duplicate.

Anybody else noticing anything different?

This should work, and works for me every time I use it at every random airport, so something is up. And yes, it's 1/2 second, not 2 seconds, sorry for that typo.

Can you try something? Go into INFO and load a non airport diagram chart (approach plate, etc). Then try the 1/2 second press.

If this brings up the approach plate, then SkyView thinks you're in flight, and we should figure out why. If it doesn't bring up the plate, then SkyView can't figure out what airport you're at, and we should figure out why.

What airport are you at so we can look at it to start? What SW version are you on?

Ok i will try more testing probably this weekend. I am based at KHAF.

I figured this would be the easiest scenario to test but still useful. At an unfamiliar airport while still parked, it would be handy to quickly pop up the airport diagram to get familiar with possible taxi instructions.

Thanks!

Yep, it generally works great and as I say, I personally use it whenever I land at an unfamiliar airport, and I've never had it not work, so there's something unique up here.

I got a chance to test it out at my home airport KHAF and at a nearby airport KTCY. Neither time did it work while taxiing. Both times, i got "NO CHART SLCTD" message.

At KHAF, i did try selecting the RNAV30Z approach, and hitting the MAP button gave me the same message "NO CHART SLCTD". I know i have gotten the button to toggle back and forth. I am not sure why it does not seem to be working now.

Both times, i had to manually select INFO, tab over, CHARTS and hit VIEW. Worked fine manually each time. Now i did try restarting a few times. On one of the restarts, the toggling worked. I could toggle back and forth. However, after another restart, it stopped working again. Not sure why.

Thus, it seems like my toggle function is inconsistent, not necessarily related to the airport diagram. Maybe something to do with the USB drive? Ill have to remember to try swapping the USB drives around, next time maybe.

I am running the latest v14.2, i think.
