My D180 airspeed indicates about 20-25 MPH when not moving on the ground, with the pitot tube covered and light wind. Is there some calibrations that I need to do? I'm using your pitot tube.
First, make sure your static is also free and clear; a vacuum on the static port can cause an erroneous positive airspeed reading.
If you find the static port to be alright, you'll want to try performing the zero airspeed calibration, which is under SETUP>SPDCAL. Take a look at the troubleshooting section of a recent installation guide for details. Note that you must be running fairly recent firmware to have this calibration menu item. This calibration needs to be done in absolutely zero wind.
Don't cap the static. What we need is the static and pitot pressures to be identical to one another. If you cap everything, they can't equalize. Also, the capping itself can pressurize the pitot/static ports, which is exactly what you don't want.
If you have a hangar, just do it in the hangar with the doors closed, no caps needed. If you do it outside, do it on a low/no wind day and put a rag over the pitot.
