Alert error trying to view screenshots in Preview

Anyone having trouble opening Skyview screenshots in Preview on an Imac? I open bit map files all the time with Preview, just can't open the Skyview ones for some reason. I get this error:

The file “screenshot-20120924-171610-259.bmp” could not be opened.

It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize.

I have to open them with another program but would prefer the ease of use of Preview.

The saved bitmap is slightly off of what most Mac programs expect for some reason... a bit irritating for sure! I use image converter to view them an change them over to much smaller jpg files on my Mac.
