I have 375 hr Skyview Classic set up on RV7a. Yesterday the ammeter ( that usually reads 7 amps Alt output at cruise) alarmed and gave negative readings, with highly variable numbers. The voltage reading from my B&C Alternator remained steady at 14.3 volts . I concluded it was a loose fitting or fault in the Skyview , as the Ammeter retuned to the “ usual “ 7 amps at cruise. Apart from one or 2 other warnings , the next few hours remained ok for the next 4 hours of flight.
I checked for loose connections , none found . Other wise all else ok .

Whats the most likely diagnosis?

If your shunt looks to be still OK and connections are all tight, have a look at the fuses that come off the shunt. There should be two.
I have had these become intermittent and cause what you are seeing.
The fuses are cheap, just put a couple of new ones in there, and clean the fuseholders up.
