AOA Boom & static

Hi there,

I have bought the Pitot/AOA Boom and am in the process of working out a mount for it. I am replacing the existing combined pitot and static with this AOA boom, so I will need a static source.

I was wondering if I could add a third pipe to the boom for static, and drill some holes in the sides of the boom about half way down, and use this to obtain static.

Has this ever been tried before?

One minor caution - be aware that if you put a static source near a wing that you have a slim chance to have accurate static source information.  The wing, by design, causes the pressure below it to be higher than ambient pressure - otherwise it wouldn't make any lift.  There will be a very small range of locations where you can put the static source below the wing and have it work well.  Yes, many type-certificated aircraft have static sources below the wing, but the manufacturers flight test several different locations before they find one that works.  That is a lot of extra work.
