AOA indicator

I like to encourage Dynon to consider a remote AOA indicator that can be placed on the glare shield in the pilot's field of view when looking at the runway on final approach. That is where almost all other manufacturer's AOA indicators are, and for good reason.

So placed it remains in your visual field during the landing phase enabling trend recognition. Looking away to the display is much less optimal. I fly with an Alpha System unit in my Cessna 180 and I find it gives me much better info than I get from the SkyView system in my experimental.

On the other hand, I'd rather have Dynon work features not yet offered. I find AOA visual indication less than useful (no matter where it is) as compared to the audio tone. I'm too busy looking out the window.

That's my point. You don't look at it unless it already is in your field of view looking out of the windscreen. If it is it then becomes very useful, yet non intrusive.

And of course if you really aren't interested in trying it that way you don't need to buy an external indicator and install it.

Yep, I agree. It would be a great addition to have a Skyview remote indicator. Similar to the Garmin unit that has come out. I wanted this for my RV-8 so I installed the AFS-Pro AOA system in parallel to the skyview which required more wiring, an extra box to mount and of course cost.

AFS - Advanced Flight Systems (a Dynon Avionics company) offers two AOA displays such as you describe.

In looking at the AFS systems they appear to be stand alone systems with their own Pitot/AOA sensor, computer, voice annunciator etc. Since SkyView already has all of these why duplicate them when all that is needed is a remote annunciator connected to the SkyView system and showing the same info already on the SkyView display?

This should be doable at a much reduced price from the stand alone AFS system. Since Dynon owns AFS maybe you could even utilize the AFS display so you would not need to design one for your system.

I agree, a remote indicator would be nice, not sure what I/O would be appropriate. That might be an issue. Anyone know what drives the AFS indicator?

The three ways to indicate AoA are:
1. Visually on screen or glareshield
2. Audibly
3. Tactile/haptically

Of these three, the most foolproof for stall avoidance is a combination of audible and haptic warnings because they work when you are distracted or not looking.

For precision approaches, however, a visual display may be beneficial.

So the question is, what is the primary function of AoA.... Precision approach angles or stall avoidance?  I developed a glareshield display for Dynon AoA indication about 8 years ago.  It worked fine, but when Dynon introduced progressive audio tones for AoA, the glareshield display became less important and the marketplace agreed.  I now use Dynon's progressive tones and a progressive haptic stick shaker of my own design for AoA indication.

As for landings, I would sooner have a radar altimeter than AoA.  I'd probably bounce less!

The two AFS AOA Units are available now. There is not a "SkyView Remote AOA annunciator" available, nor is one planned. If you would like to create your own AOA display, the Angle of Attack data is available as part of a data stream from one of the multi-purpose serial ports.

In response to Vern-X: Your comments and experience are very interesting. Do you think that in the last 8 years the increased awareness of AOA usefulness and the FAA and AOPA Safety Institutes pushing for them might have changed the market's perception?

Also I would be interested in more details about your Dynon compatible glareshield display. Did it receive the AOA data from the Dynon or did it need separate AOA input? Any other details you would be willing to share?

It's the only avionics product that I have ever discontinued. It's dead and buried .  I don't think it enhanced safety and that's the big reason.  Audio and haptics is the way to go.  I talked to ASTM and FAA reps about stall avoidance and it's more complicated than a visual display mounted to the glareshield.

Oddly, the one I used in my RV I repurposed as a flaps overspeed alarm (with audio). It was more useful to have a gentle audio reminder to retract my flaps.

I think a good compromise would be to change the AOA widget on the PDF screen.  It is too small, but that is fine most of the time.

It should expand to the same size and right alongside of the ASI tape at a speed you can adjust and when the audio is active.  That is just a software change.
