AP74 NAV button not enabled using Garmin 396

We have an EMS D10, EFIS D10A and AP74 (+ 2 servos) hooked up to a Garmin 396. All have latest firmware (including the garmin). AP works find in Heading, track and ALT mode, but the NAV button cannot be used. It cannot be enabled at all (the light won't even come on). The EFIS does winds aloft calculation and the EMS does fuel remaining calculations, etc. So the EFIS/EMS do get GPS information. The 396 is hooked up to the EMS.
Any idea's why NAV will not work? I tried 'direct to' and 'route'.

Problem solved. After a firmware upgrade of the 396, the default setting in the advanced communication settings is 'off' for navigation information.
