ARINC 429 connection question

Hello Dynon,

I have a dual Skview Classic setup with your ARINC-429 device taking data from a Garmin 430W to the Skyview for autopilot coupling of IFR approaches. I have recently installed a Garmin G5 in the panel for backup attitude indication and I want to also send the lateral/vertical guidance for an IFR approach to display on that device from the ARINC-429. In the installation manual diagram specific to the 430W installation it indicates both TXA and TXB circuits from the ARINC429 should be connected back to the 430W, but is that necessary to have both A and B going to the 430W? Can I have one of those TX paths going to the G5 to deliver data there as well?

The GNS-430/530 outputs GPS guidance on one ARINC channel and VOR/Localizer guidance on the other channel. Both would have to be connected to the SkyView ARINC-429 module if you wish both sides of the GNS to be able to provide course guidance to SkyView.

You'll need to contact Garmin directly for support on interconnecting the G5 with the GNS-430.

That much is clear - but that requires the TX from the 430W to the RX on the ARINC429. I'm talking about the TX from the 429 back to the RX on the 430 - are those required? Is there any data passing BACK to the 430 from the ARINC?

I ask because the 429 has dual TX pins on A and B that are electrically identical, yet they are both shown to be connected to the 430W with data flowing back to the 430W. If those are not BOTH needed, I could take one pair and send them to the G5.

The dual connections are most likely for redundancy, should one pair fail.  In any case, here's what's being sent from the ARINC-429 box:

http://wiki.dynonavionics.com/SV-ARINC-429_Labels

ARINC-429 Labels Transmitted by the SV-ARINC-429

100: Selected Course

101: Selected Heading

102: Selected Altitude

203: Pressure Altitude

204: Baro Corrected Alt

210: True Airspeed

211: Total Air Temperature

320: Magnetic Heading

147: Magnetic Variation

I suppose they may not be *required* to be sent to the 430, but then you wouldn't be able to set the OBS course.

You could split one of the two TX lines and send it to both devices, though.

I have the exact same setup (G5 on order). Airguy, please post what you find. I thought I had to have a Garmin GAD 29 to get the G5 to display IFR lateral and vertical guidance.

That's confirmed - the G5 will only accept IFR guidance from Garmin's GAD29 ARINC interface, you cannot connect to Dynon (or presumably any other) ARINC device.

IMO that's one of the reasons why some are not going the Garmin way anymore, who wants to be 'locked into' systems that have a short warranty period & huge out of warranty repair costs - interoperability, & redundancy, is the way to go.
