Basic ADS-B question re: Skyview

Regarding the discussion of the dual-band 472, I might be working with incorrect information. My understanding is that with ADS-B Out and the 1090ES transponders, traffic information is relayed directly between like equipped aircraft. I'm equipped with the SV-XPNDR-261 (and the ADSB-470 box for 978 traffic). I had thought that my Skyview D1000T will display 1090ES equipped ADS-B OUT traffic without the addition of the 472 box. Is this not correct?

I presumed (incorrectly??) that the 470 box gave me 1) FIS-B weather and 2) direct 978 traffic. Without that box, I would still get ADS-B traffic from other 1090ES aircraft and ADS-R rebroadcast traffic from ground stations with the 978 traffic and Mode C traffic. I did not consider the 472 box because it did not give me anything I didn't already have.

Re: Basic ADS-B question Skyview

You will not get direct traffic information from a 1090 out aircraft; it must come from a ground station.

The 470 receives on 978, which is primarily received from ground stations. Few aircraft transmit out on 978 but that number may grow as the deadline nears and those systems are less expensive than 1090 MHz out boxes (to date).

The only reason to upgrade to the 472 is to get aircraft to aircraft data on 1090 when not receiving from ground stations (think mid-west).

You're assumption is correct. You're only missing peer to peer communications on 1090. You should still receive the traffic, but with a little delay because it has to be rebroadcast.

Unless you're in an area where it cannot be rebroadcast - because the traffic is not being seen by radar, such as low-level or in the mountains, or offshore.

If you are using a separate encoder, it should communicate directly with the transponder. You need pinout wiring diagram for the Garmin and for the encoder.
Seems like a strange way to go, when you could have Skyview with Dynon transponder, with no need for separate encoder, and for significantly less money, and easier calibration.

Re: Basic ADS-B question Skyview

Since I have a newer Garmin transponder GTX335 can I not go directly from the skyview to the rs232 on the Garmin without having a separate altitude encoder?

That would be a question for Garmin to see if that’s supported.

Yes you can - the format from the Dynon is ‘seen’ by all digital transponders ;)

Garmin says ALT FMT 3 supports Shadlin/Icarus/ACk/ will the skyview support that same Format?

Re: Basic ADS-B question Skyview

If you are using serial port 1 from the skyview to the rs232 in on a Garmin GTX335 you have one wire going to the 3 stranded wires on the GTX rs232 I can't find how to do the wiring

Re: Basic ADS-B question Skyview

They are TX, RX & serial ground. For Icarus Alt into the GTX I’d just use the TX (from Dynon port) to RX of the GTX & connect the serial ground to the Dynon ground.
Remember to configure the serial ports on both units. ;)
