Just received Dynon pitot boom type. Will be placing it in a Long Ez that's in the processes of being resurfaced and painted. The question is as follows: The length of the tube needs to be reduce to fit in the nose of the Long EZ. Is there any problem with reducing the tube length? Current plan is at later date to install a skyview. [smiley=undecided.gif]

The pitot is constructed with some epoxy near the snout, and more near the rear exit, to hold everything together (the epoxy compound at the rear is visible). I think - but am not certain, as the exact construction has changed slightly over time - that it's empty space in between. So while it's not impossible, it's not designed to be modified. We don't reccomend it. Some people have, on occasion. Know that we can't warrant pitots that have been cut down or modified.

Thanks for the quick response. Realize that if pitot is modified then there is no warranty which is not an issue. Just need it to be about 1/2 the length. LOL Did not realize how long it was when ordering since there was not a schematic on the web site. The next question is: could the L shape work if the tube was removed from the L housing? Just attempting to figure out which is the better approach; really want the AoA capability.

Toad,

Have you considered mounting the L probe on the bottom of the fuselage? If you put it opposite the mid canopy position or further aft I believe you would have ground clearance when parked with the nose on the ground. As long as it is parallel to the chord of the wing it should be accurate.

Yes considered that; Placing it mid-canopy would cause it to be in the speed break position. Any place forward of speed break or aft pose issues with clear air. Burt placed the pitot at the nose to allow clear air to pitot. One of the issues with pitot on the bottom is that even with the pitot forward of the speed brake it would still have problems with clear air when the landing light is deployed. Considered placing an L shape on the side under the canard; but the L shape did not indicate that the tube could be rotated 90 degrees so the air intakes are vertical to the ground.

The L shaped AOA/Pitot doesn't come apart easily either, and has the same epoxy-based construction holding everything together.
