I upgraded to 7.0 this morning and now have a caution message saying "GPS for Transponder is offline" or something to that effect. I don't have the dynon transponder and no ADSB. I am sure it's just a setting, haven't had time to play with it. What's the fix??

There were no changes for that feature in 7.0 that we can remember. Did you update from 6.0 or an earlier version?

Do you have a red X at the top next to the clock with a little "XP" on the side?

I upgraded to 7.0 from 6.2.  I didn't  notice a red x near the clock, since I looked at the clock several times, I probably would have noticed a red x.

Edit: After looking in the manual to see what the warning you describe looks like, the answer is NO, no red X with xp displayed.

Are any of the serial ports erroneously set to there being a transponder? Also, what's the EXACT message you're seeing?

The message is "XPNDR  GPS IN OFFLINE"  I don't know about the serial ports.  I will check to see.  It was fine before the 7.0 upgrade and can't imagine how a serial port got assigned during upgrade.  It does have the ARINC module with a non-waas Garmin 430, could the system be looking for the waas from the 430 and warning accordingly.
Maybe it's a setting for the arinc module?  I was looking back through the 6.0 pilots guide and the caution message I am seeing did not exist in 6.0.  It is apparently something that was added in 7.0

Edit #2 Just checked the airplane. No serial ports mis-configured. Transponder menu in setup is greyed out, everything in the ARINC setup is correct and functioning.
Me thinks we have a software bug :'(

So try this:

- Set any currently unused serial port to either of the dynon transponders
-Go to SETUP MENU > TRANSPONDER SETUP. I'm guessing GPS DATA somehow got incorrectly set to one of the direct options. Change it to SKYVIEW.
- Exit the setup menu
- Go back into the setup menu and remove the transponder from the serial port setup.

That fix it?

You Da Man!! Yes that fixed it. It was set to one of the external sources as you suspected. All is perfect now!
Thanks

Is this error message new as of 7.0? I am seeing it now after updating, and wasn't seeing it before then. I was assuming that the feed from my 430W was working, maybe not? I switched to Dynon in the transponder setup and the error message went away.

Harry,

I was getting the same message and switched the output from the 430W (latest Garmin update applied) serial port from AVIATION to GARMIN ADSB and the transponder now is happy.

The only downside of that was that I was sharing the same serial output line with the 406 ELT and now I will have to run a separate serial line off of another 430W serial port to the ELT using the AVIATION data format for it..

Hope this helps.. :)

I've got the message also. I do not have a 430 in my plane. I've got the Dynon GPS and a Garmin 396. Will the message go away using the Dynon GPS for position source. My understanding was that you didn't need a certified source till 2020?

If you have a 430W or GTN, then this message means that either the Dynon or Garmin side setting isn't set to Garmin ADS-B format, or there's a connectivity problem. This message hasn't always existed - we added it so that you know when the GPS isn't getting from your certified GPS to the transponder.

If you don't have our transponder and/or one of those certified GPSes, the ADS-B setting should be set to SkyView as detailed above. The default is SkyView, so we're not sure how those of you that are in that state are getting there. I'm coincidentally just did an update from 6.2 to 7.0 here, and it didn't cause this issue, so I don't think it's upgrade related.

I think the update is doing something. I made no changes other than update from 6.2 to 7.0. I got the message. Not a big deal. When I saw the message I remembered reading something about it here. So I didn't worry about it. I looked at the serial ports because I remembered it had something to do with that. But I could figure it out at the airport with no internet connection. Next time out I'll fix it. Version 7 is nice though. I flew it a little tonight, I really like the pan and pop up message. I like the nose up for climb to altitude. Haven't opted for the geo referenced plates and taxi diagrams yet. I real happy with my system, over two years working very well indeed.

I also now have the caution message after going from 6.2 to 7.0. I have the Dynon transponder and ADSB with input from a Garmin 430. I have not found configuration errors but will continue to look.

In your case, charlie, that means that the transponder isn't seeing the ADS-B GPS position from the 430. The alert was added at 7.0. Previously, if it wasn't working, you'd never know unless you noticed that your ADS-B traffic picture wasn't all that complete (because the transponder wouldn't be outputting GPS position to the ADS-B system, which is what it needs to wake up and send you back your traffic).

Now, do you have a 430W with the latest software, with its serial port set to Garmin ADS-B format? If it's a regular 430, you won't be able to use the 430's GPS position for ADS-B.

Hello Dynon,

With regard to the Garmin 430W software, what is the exact software version for the Garmin 430W that I should be asking from a Garmin dealer to be compatible with the ADS-B requirement? Also any idea what the order of magnitude of the going price for such an upgrade is and can the Garmin remain in the airframe when the upgrade is installed?

The latest service bulletin for the 400W series products indicates the latest software is 5.03. Software 5.00 was the first to support ADS-B OUT so anything 5.00 or newer is fine for us.

I believe the updates are "free" from Garmin, but the update must be done by a dealer and your local dealer is welcome to charge you whatever they want for the service. You'd have to ask them if they can do it in the plane or if it needs to be removed. Technically it can be done in the plane but there might be logistical reasons they can't do this.

Kind of a funny world when you need to ask Dynon about Garmin products ;)

Yes and it also clearly states something about the customer service I prefer, thanks for the reply and taking the effort to find the proper Garmin statement  ::)
