The SkyView USB port is a standard port like you'd find on a PC. This means the iPad will only charge at 500mA, which I believe doesn't even count as "charging" to Apple, even though some power is being transferred.

An additional concern with SkyView is that the USB ports are powered by the backup battery, so you can drain that battery quickly with external devices if your power fails.

Here are some previous discussions on using SkyView to power USB devices:

I feel really dumb! For some reason it completely escaped me that we have a 12v "cigarette lighter" between the seats of the RV-12. That is the obvious spot to use the USB adapter and provide power to the iPad during a long flight. Why I didn't think of that is beyond me. Sorry about that. I successfully made an easy problem difficult.

I had a COMM problem (the squelch would cut in frequently, really annoying). It took me a while to figure out it was the USB adaptor in the cigarette lighter. RF is magic.. ;-)

Which ones did you end up with Murray? Both Stratux power supplies have had RF interference for me.

I don't have any brand names. The ones that worked were just cheap ones that my wife picked up at the dollar store. I bought a Duracell that was $15 and it generated static so it's kind of hit and miss which ones work.

For my Stratux I found this at Amazon. I wired it to the back of my cigarette lighter plug to save a breaker. The dual freq Stratux along with the power supply is mounted behind the panel next to the GTR 200. It works without causing static:

The only thing that Stratux finds here in Canada are airliners 30G above me. :(
