After completing the compass calibration procedure (either with a an installed Garmin GPS or manual compass), I do not get a "save data" message mentioned in the instructions. Thus the data (which the unit says it has) can not be saved or displayed. My compass is reading 12 degrees off which sucks. What am I missing here?

There is some discussion here. You may have to adjust your compass closer to correct before the inflight calibration will work.
