csv-readout of EMS, how to read???

Hi there!
I read out the EMS internal log today and'm trying to understand the colums of numbers shown when I open the .csv-data with MS excel. I read the help files of the Dynon support program but....Is there a program or excel-sheet that puts the mass of numbers into a readable form? One row of data looks like this:

If you have Microsoft Excel installed, just open the .csv file with it. Csv is one of the options in the filetype dropdown when you go to open a file from Excel. It will interpret all the columns correctly.

...well, when I open the file with Excel it looks like the attached file. Anything wrong with my Excel-settings? :-/

Hello Dirk,

this is pretty standard what the .csv format in Excel looks like. There is an easy fix, select column A by clicking on the A, then go to the Menu point Daten and choose the Text to Columns (I guess will be Spalten in your German Version). And there you go with a perfect sorted Excel (.xls) file, please use the Save As and choose .xls as format.  ;)

Now if you want to know how to make graphs out of that that is another storry  ::)

In Excel, choose File > Open.... Then, in "Files of type," select Text Files (*.prn; *.txt; *.csv). Then, open the .csv file. I just tried that here with one of our data output .csv files, and it worked. Let us know if you have any problems.

...well, after I recieved the first set of current data from my EMS today it shows up that if I change the csv-files as Werner suggested they are arranged in colums. So far, so good. But some of the datas seem to have split numbers i.e. 1.987 , so the sheet puts the 1 in a colum and the 987 into the next one. Result is, that the numbers from that point on do not corresponded with the values for that row.
I will attach the raw sheet to this post, maybe some excel-guru can convert it into a readable form.

Dirk,

you have a problem with your country settings, the delimiter for decimals values in Germany seems to be a "," where the delimiter to divide the different columns is also a "," this then get's the whole thing out of sequence! As Switzerland uses the . (as the US) as delimiter for the decimal values my log is ok.

For Dynon, using the ";" would be a better delimiter for the fields! ;)

For Dirk, before you download (probably) the file you need to change your regional and language settings from German to eg. Switzerland(German) and your decimal will be "." and you can convert correct.

I'm not sure, but you might check if you did not save your file as .csv out of Excel the old (original) file might still be usable (you can check it by opening (ÖFFNEN MIT) it in Notepad and if you see the "." in there then you just replace all "," with ";" and the "." all with ",", then your German Excel will work and the new seperator is ";" if you don't see the "." then you need to change your regional settings before you donwload the file.

Eureka! I set the country settings on my laptop to "USA", and bingo, everything arranged nicely. Thanks alot!!! Hey, Dynon-guys, can you change the interruptions to ;, so the poor german (maybe others??) will be able to use the backup data immediately? ;)

Hello Dirk,

good to hear you did succeed, now it's just the German and Austrian which have this strange setting :p

But it would help if Dynon would change the field seperator to ; as this is as far as I know in no coutry used as seperator inside a number.

I'm working on my program (Waiter's Flight Data Recorder) to allow reading and display of the "cvs" files (and the raw data files that were recorded).

I have two questions:

1) In the stored data file there is a field called "EMS raw data". Do you have any parsing data for this field? I thought it was the same as the data coming out the serial port, but when I run it through my program, I get garbage.

2) how firm are you on this standard. I don't want to go to a lot of trouble, then have the format change.

NEVER MIND, I figured out the parsing of the csv file.

I'll be posting a new version of Waiters Flight Data Recorder that can read and display this data, and save it to a FDR file.

I've uploaded version 3.2.8 of Waiters Flight Data Recorder on my web site.

This version will allow you to read, disply, and convert two types of data files.

1) A file that is created by capturing the serial data from an EFIS or an EMS device (D10, D100,

D180). Name the file *.DAT

2) A "*.CSV" file generated by the Dynon Utility. EMS devices (D10, D100, D180) can record EMS

data internally. This data can then be downloaded by using the Dynon Utility, and saved as a CSV

file.

Follow this procedure to read the files.

READING DATA FILES

From the mainscreen, click on CONFIGURATION.

On the EFIS or ENGINE window, click the READ FILE option.

Click on the EFIS (EMS) DATA FILE box to select a data file to read.

Raw Serial data from the EFIS or EMS should be saved with a "DAT" file extension.

EMS download files will be saved as a CSV file extension.

Select the file you wish to view.

Click VIEW DATA to view the individual data, Use the slider to select the record.

Use CONVERT FILE to save the file as a WDFR text file.
