D10A problems after firmware 5.1.1 install

I recently upgraded my D10A firmware from 4.0 to 5.1.1. Now the compass display is erratic and usually way off (internal - no EDC 10A yet), the CDI is missing from the main and HSI pages (it's selected "on"), and the horizon display is sloppy and slow to react. The Garmin 296 is talking to the D10A because I show GS and ground track on the HSI page. I haven't tried a new mag cal yet. Do I need to disconnect the backup battery for a cold reboot? I backed up the firmware so I can go back if I need to. Ideas?

Could you double check and confirm that you have 5.1.1 installed and not 5.1.0? We'd expect this behavior on a few units on the initial release, but 5.1.1 is the fixed version.

A reboot/reset wouldn't help in this case, though restoring the backup should. If you do do that, could you send us both backups, both your pre and post upgrade, zipped up, to support at dynonavionics.com with a reference to this thread? Alternatively, give technical support a call directly at 425-402-0433.

The "version" check shows 5.1.1. I'll reinstall the previous firmware from the backup, after backing up the 5.1.1 that's now installed, and send them both. Thanks.

I just reinstalled software version 4.0.4 and everything is back to normal. I sent Dynon Support zipped copies of both backed-up versions so they can look at 'em. We'll see...

I'm running a new D10A with 5.1.1 and a GPS 296. With the GPS 296 providing NMEA data to the D10A on Com 2, I get attitude and heading errors, erroneous wind readouts, etc. Worse in the air, but also seen on ground. Disable GPS 296 output and all problems go away. The GPS 296 is driving a NavAid A/P on Com 1, same D10A display problem whether Com 1 disabled or not. Using ext magnetometer and OAT in wing tip on RV6.

I'm not running this rabbit real hard right now because all I lose, with no GPS input, is/are winds, not driving A/P, etc., and assume some fix will emerge eventually. Could always be RFI also, to be fair, and getting on the serial line somehow, which is very small, unshielded, about 28-32 gauge.

I simply navigate from the GPS 296 screen.

wv4i: If there were noise on the ground between the 296 and the Dynon, that can cause serial dropouts. Also, if your other device were somehow not playing nicely with its serial receive line, that could be an issue too. What happens if you connect the 296 to just the Dynon.

One other thing that is a bit mysterious: Are you saying that you have attitude issues, but only when your GPS is connected? Do your airspeed readings look normal?

Yes. In flight, saw left wing down, heading precessed to right, and erroneous wind readouts (like plane was in a substantial crosswind). D10A airspeed matches steam airpspeed within 1-2 mph. Just disabled GPS serial line, and have not had time yet to get back up and t/s more.

Only have data line connected fm GPS 296 to D10A. GPS and D10A would have common ground thru airframe.

Having serial output of GPS enabled or disabled to NavAid a/p has no effect on problem.
