Am mounting a new D10A in my Long EZ at the top and center of the original 6-pack. CBs run in a line along the top of the panel. Should I need the external compass? And if not, what to do with those wires from the harness?
Thank you!

Yes, you should use the remote magnetometer. It's very rare that a panel is electromagnetically clean enough to not warrant the use of the EDC-D10A. If we had to do it all over again, we wouldn't have the internal magnetometers, period. In fact, the D100/D180/D60, which were follow-on designs to the D10/D10A, don't!

I appreciate the general advice. Was hoping you could see from my panel what would affect it, if anything. Would it be the power in the breakers above or .....?
I read that waving a small compass around in the vicinity would indicate any interference?
Thanks again.

In your panel in particular, the breakers, which have current flowing through them right next to the EFIS, will definitely foul up the EFISs internal magnetometers' ability to sense heading. Basically, wires and devices carrying current have electromagnetic fields around them, and things trying to sense Earth's mag field that are near them can't tell the difference between Earth's magnetic field and the effects of the nearby devices. Get just 1-2 feet away from such devices, and their magnetic field's drop off enough that they're weaker than Earth's.

Got the remote compass. The best place I can find away from power lines is near the transponder antenna - is that a problem?

Also, my panel is as thick as the studs on the D10. How do people mount this unit to thicker panels?

Thanks again!

Hi
Just for FYI
I placed my Remote compass for my D 60 in the left wing root. I took off the wing and found a GREAT place for it
No wires, or anything else to disrupt the instrument.
I bought some washers that have a threaded rod attached to it. Attached 4 of these to the unit and microed it into place. I was able to adjust for left to right and forward and aft just be adjusting the nuts on the threaded rod.
PS I have aLong EZ

Stan,
Any pictures? And how did you deal with the thickness of your panel and the short studs?
Thanks!
