So my first flight with any Dynon equipment left me very disappointed.

I used my brand new D3 (factory latest firmware) on a short 100mile (1hr) cross country. Working as expected, really clear in clear bluebird day. Landed and shut aircraft down but forgot to turn D3 off.

Spent 30mins paying landing fee's and having a drink. Went to fly back, screen blank. Pressed the button, sceen border flashed but nothing, kept button pressed for 10 seconds then the Dynon screen comes on, let go off button, screen blank, repeat for longer, Dynon screen then disclaimer shows, let go of button, screen blank. Tried sgain, Dynon screen, disclaimer, tapped the screen when disclaimer shoed, got the big red X with slopball etc great. :) , let go of button blank screen! Fuming!

Total waste of almost £1000.

Flew to my airfield (1hr) put plane away, 30mins, drove home 1hr 45mins. Plugged into charger, screen cones on with red X and slip ball, battery level at about 50-70% !!

So the Dynon was on i guess but the screen showed nothing!

Might get a refund and warn people off Dynon Equipment unless there customer service is better than there equipment.

Hi.

It was a 0 Celsius day and when parked up the D3 was not in the sun.

I will try and test it in the car with a temperature gauge near it.

Sorry that you're not having an awesome experience here. We think we have explanations for all of the things you experienced, but there's a chance there's something up here. So, a few thoughts:

First, check under SETTINGS > INACTIVITY TIMER. If that's set to the 15 minutes setting, the D3 will power down after 15 minutes of inactivity (lunch break) to help save the battery. If it's instead set to STAY ON, there might be something up here.

The "red X" is expected when the unit is doesn't have a GPS lock. GPS is used not to determine the attitude, but it's used to cross-check it. It's a required input to the attitude algorithm, and so when you don't have a GPS lock, you'll get the red X display for attitude and the other GPS-derived values (speed, altitude).

As for the power-on behavior. After pressing the button for about a second, release it and wait and see if that turns it on. We'd expect that you'll see a flash, then a blank screen for a few seconds, and then the Dynon logo screen and then eventually the disclaimer. If it's held too long, then the unit may think that the button was depressed after it was turned on, and the release is basically registering as the press and hold for two seconds that normally turns the unit off.

All of that said, if you don't think the unit is acting correctly, please reach out to our support team at either 425-402-0433, support at dynonavionics dot com, or through the retailer you purchased it from and we'll see what else we can do to make this right for you.
