At the core is the question of "What data is in this World-wide terrain database. "? To display what it does, it needs to have MSL terrain elevation, and at least a flag to indicate the nature of the "terrain" at each point, sufficient to paint the "view" to indicate ground, water, and whatever other visual discriminants it needs.
Then, the next question is how much memory is available to store additional data in this database. If the database memory is limited, that would explain why the picture only displays what it currently does, as well as Dynon's reluctance to entertain suggestions to include more information in the display. In addition to a significant software upgrade, adding more memory to hold that additional data might require a hardware upgrade.
Granted, a more extensive terrain database is available inside of Skyview, but that data is not accessible to the D3., and making it so would also require a hardware upgrade and make the D3 somewhat dependent on the Skyview system, instead of being a stand-alone independent IFR/IMC backup.
