D30 clarification

I'm thinking through a light IFR panel for a RV8. I plan on 2 displays with battery backups, and 2 ADHRS.

My understanding is that would provide redundancy both for display and data, as the system could handle a failure in either screen, or ADHRS.

If that is correct, is there a need for a D30 for backup? What if any backup capability would that provide?

Thanks

In my 9A, I'm running the same type of redundancy but I still have a G5 for backup. My logic was that both screens are still made by the same manufacturer, running the same software, and while it might be farfetched it's not impossible for a single software problem to take them both out. The G5 will at least allow me to keep the greasy side down while finding an airport with ATC assistance.

I have to whole hearted agree w/ airguy. When I designed, built, and installed my IFR upgrade w/ dual 10" screens and an IFD540 a couple of years ago, I also chose a G5 as my standby ADI for mostly the same reasons. Additional reasons: At the time at least, it actually had the smallest panel footprint of all the candidates. Also, if you carefully study the installation manuals, you can even pipe *some* nav info to it from non-Dynon nav sources if you burn enough brain cells working it all out.

I did install the D30 to compliment my single screen HDX in my RV6. I regret having been talked in to the D30. It is extremely basic, and there haven't been any features or software upgrades at all. The feature I miss most is a heading indicator. Also, the D30 is a pain to calibrate. You have to do it on the ground, and my airplane doesn't sit level. So you guess...then you fly, then guess again, then fly again, etc. But you have to power off to get to the calibration screen. Not a great UX design. A knob to adjust barometer would've been nice. It would be nice if Dynon had an experimental aircraft software version for the D30. I'd load and test software regularly if they would release a few features.

I'm very happy with the single screen HDX. That, with a GPS175, iPad, and iPhone...I have plenty of screens to do things. If I could do it over again, I'd get a backup EFIS that has a heading indicator and maybe a few other features. Like the G5 or AV-30.

I had a EMS module failure that took down the Skyview buss. Just big red X’s. I have a D100 for my backup. Once I got on the ground I was able to disconnect the EMS and was able to get my PFD back, but no engine info. A totally independent system is your best approach for a backup.
