Right now http://www.dynonavionics.com/docs/news_technology_preview.html is the limit of the detail we're providing, although, datalogging is in the wrong column. It's should be in the "future" category, not "in progress". We'll fix that.

This is most likely a deal breaker for me, if i want to do a first flight within the next year. I could live without advanced EFIS features, SV, etc. but the one requirement for test flying is to have engine data logging.

It is hard to imagine not having a very simple data logging feature. It could simply append to a simple text file. Not only would many others find that useful but i am sure it would help with beta testing and debugging. Not sure how else you would do effective beta testing for the product before public release without some sort of data capture capabilities.

Wow, I could be wrong but thousands of test flights have occurred with out electronic engine data logging. I did mine (entries) on a plain paper note book.
I even did my flying for about 300 hours with steam gauges before switching to Dynon D-100 EFIS. And to this day I still don't have any engine data logging, it would be nice but I just make a note of things in question.
I will install the EMS when I get the SkyView system. but until then paper and pen will have to do. Give it a try, and enjoy the new SkyView experience.

Right, i agree anything is possible. Another scenario is using a camcorder to record the screen.

I hope Dynon responds about data logging. It seems like it should already be supported in the system, even in a development form for diagnostics and debugging.

We do have datalogging for internal use. It records a huge amount of raw data for us to use for debugging. It is not nicely formatted nor well documented. The ability to export it is in one of the menus and it creates about a 500mb file (it's a constant loop).

We will have customer datalogging with full documentation in the future, like we do for the current EMS and EFIS, but I can't yet say exactly when that will be. Within a year is a real possibility.

Can we get access to the little data you guys have for internal logging? something is better then nothing ... I could then possible write my own program to format it in a way I need the data... Plus i can make the tool public for others to use... this would be helpful till you guys complete your own development!

SO?

Its almost a year! any updates on data logging? when should we expect it to be out?

We only really target features in the next release and "everything" else at the moment. It probably won't make it into the Jan release (3.0), but it's on the list of features that we'll definitely get to soon.

Just another voice really wanting that feature. It's almost in the category of assumed capability, since every other EFIS and all of the newest engine monitors do it.

Sure, test flights can be done with a pencil and paper. Bring some crayons, too, and draw the mountains instead of using the synthetic vision.

I agree, it seems silly that I can log the data on my RV-4 with the D180, but a year after its release, I still can't on the SkyView. I think things like this and the g-meter are assumed basic features, especially since they have been incorporated on all the other Dynon EFIS/ engine monitors....

We're still wrapping up 3.0 here, so we haven't gotten to the next release's detailed planning yet. That means no meaningful update just yet, unfortunately.

Am I to assume that the serial output released with 3.1 is the data logging feature? Or is Dynon planning a simpler dump to USB stick type of data logging? Thanks for your time.

Real-time serial output is coming to the ADAHRS data too in the future, but ALSO, we'll have a way to export a datalog file to your USB stick. So there are really two features: serial out data streams (EMS is in 3.1, and ADAHRS and NMEA are coming soon), and internal exportable data logs (also coming in the future).

combine this handy serial logger:
http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9530
with the new serial data output.

It can be even more automatic than a data dump function.

I'd have to look into the voltage level of the serial output. The logger is meant for 5v serial in. Don't hook it directly to the serial line out until we know the D1000/D700 serial voltage.

ADAHRS serial port streaming will be in 3.2, which is the next release, but we don't have a published date for that yet.
