Dual COM radios question

On page 9-14 of the Skyview HDX UserGuide, under Dual COM Radios, iin the first para it says that only the primary radio can receive airports and frequencies from Skyview.

But in the 2nd para, it says that if 2nd radio is from Dynon, all its control panel features will work the "same way" as the primary radios.

I am adding a Garmin GNC215 as a 2nd COM radio. Does the above mean that to get the best combination of functionality from the two radios, I should configure the GNC215 as the primary, so that the 2nd radio will be the Dynon?

You can do it either way, but only the primary will receive and frequencies from Skyview, unless that has changed recently too.

I was referring to the text on pg 9-14 of the latest HDX Users Guide (RevR) [My Italics]

Dual Com Radios
If you have more than one Com radio that can communicate with SkyView, only the primary Com radio’s status information will be displayed in the Top Bar. Additionally, only the primary radio will receive airports or frequencies from SkyView when SkyView HDX’s TUNE or APT>COM buttons are used.

However, if your second Com radio is from Dynon, all its control-panel based features work just like the primary radio’s. In other words, you can still use the APT button to load airports, the TWR/GND/ATIS/ATC buttons to tune frequencies, and airport/station types are reverse-looked up when you manually tune the second radio.
The use of the word However led me to infer that there was a difference in behavior when the Dynon Transceiver was configured as the second COM radio.

Good point. As I said, things may have changed. So far, I haven't seen anyone mention this operation working that way.

The only difference between radio one and radio two if they are Dynon, is pushing the APT>COM button on the HDX will load the airport into the prmary radio so if you then push the TWR/GND etc button on that radio panel it loads that frequency into the standby position on the primary radio. To get to the same place on the secondary radio, you push APT on the secondary radio panel, twist the frequency knob to bring up the desired airport, and push the frequency button to load that airport. Then you push TWR/GND etc buttons the same. In other words, the only difference I know of is how you load and select the airport into the radio panel. You can load the primary radio just like you load the secondary radio if you wish.
I'm basing this on how I operate my dual HDX and dual Dynon radio panel.

jmeade,

I'm now thinking that the comment in the User manual needs to be read more carefully than I did at first glance. The "APT" in the quote from the User manual may refer to the "APT" button on the COM panel, not the APT->COM software button on the HDX. and then, that also explains what the phrase "control-panel based features" in "all its control-panel based features work just like the primary radio’s." is getting at. Thinking about what it doesn't say, they are saying it's HDX-based features are still not the same as the HDX-based features that are integrated with the primary radio.

That was my impression too. It's too easily misunderstood.
