Dynon HDX and Avidyne Wifi Connectivity

Folks,

I have researched thios topic on the forum, but the specific details have not been articualted.

I am trying to connect my Dynon HDX Wifi as a third party Wifi to my IFD-540.

I am using the following references:

· IFD500 Series Pilot Guide, Defining Wifi Network Configuration,” page 7-73.

· I also reviewed Tom Harper’s video concerning the setup procedures:

When I get to the “Network Configuration Page,” my SkyView-N129VA wifi network DOES NOT SHOW UP (I know it is working, I tested with Foreflight on Ipad send a flight plan). Dynon Wifi Setup also shows “Online.”

I also tried typing in the Network name SkyView-N129VA and password into the Network Configuration Page, it did not save.

Anyone have success with this? Thanks, Tim



One oddity, as you see the Skyview-N129VA has a “dash,” when I typed into the Network Configuration Page I did not find a dash.

I have done this with my Skyview classic touch and my IFD 540. You have to configure the IFD to the same network as Skyview. You must setup the IFD in the configuration pages as a remote / join network device so it joins the Skyview Network. in that setup page you enter the Skyview name and the Skyview password. If you go to Avidyne IFD help site and follow the instructions to join a Stratus network it is the same except change the name to match your Skyview network name and password.

you may want to simplify the Skyview name and remove the dash. If it is not in the Avidyne character set it will never connect.

once the Avidyne version 10.3 becomes available it promises to share the Skyview weather and traffic onto the Avidyne via WiFi.

also note that if you are using Foreflight you can get flight plans from the Avidyne but can be a little cumbersome. You must do it thru the devices tab. Foreflight promises to fix this but so far in over a year they have not.

Thanks for the info. The Avidyne Tech Support and Facebook's "Avidyne Pilots Club" also has been a great resource.

I now understand how to add the Skyview Network to the IFD-540.

I did ask Avidyne Tech Support about the Foreflight flight planning - to the panel, their response below:

"However, you should be able to transfer your flight plan via the Dynon. We do not have a lot of info on our side as far as the Dynon interface but I would venture to guess it is going to just act as a middleman (like a stratus)."

DYNON - Can you comment on how this would work?

The problem come into play when you try to push a flight plan from Foreflight to the panel. Foreflight will show two devices that can accept a flight plan, Skyview and the IFD. Foreflight has no way for you to select which device to send it to. So, when you push to the panel it will pick one. Most of the time it is Skyview. I come from to belief that if you have a IFR navigator you will use that and never use Skyview. I have brought this to Foreflight’s attention several times. They keep saying it is on the radar to fix but……. I have been waiting for about 2 years now.

To get a flight plan from the panel you will have to go to the MORE tab and select DEVICES then select the IFD and tap the route. It will then pull that route into Foreflight. This is most important and the most useful feature. I will never push a flight plan to the panel while in flight. When you push a flight plan to the IFD it always generates a new plan that has to be selected and activated. This is not practical when flying IFR, in my opinion. Make all your changes in-flight on the IFD then pull it into Foreflight via the MORE, Devices tab. But it would be nice to do the flight planning on Foreflight and reliably load the initial planned route to the IFD.

I have not been able to push a flight plan from DYNON Skyview directly to the IFD. I do not know how that would work off hand. There are no controls to do that. Conceivably you could use Foreflight as the middleman vehicle, Skyview to Foreflight to IFD. But that will be once the software is fixed. But then I go back to my belief of not using Skyview flight plans when you have a IFR navigator. The IFD has much more power in flight planning options such as victor airways, holds, altitudes, radial / distance waypoints, crossing altitudes, etc…

BTW,
If you are using FlyQ it will crash with the IFD on the Skyview network. This is due to the network having two GPS sources. Skyview and the IFD. The FlyQ is totally confused and try to const. switch between the two GPS sources. Foreflight has enough logic to pick the best source. Which will always be the IFD.
