Why did Dynon design the HDX system so that you need a separate WIFI dongle for every screen instead of just one dongle for the system? I think this might be the reason that the WIFI disconnects frequently from my iPad running Foreflight. FYI, The same iPad when connected to my Stratux never disconnects, so I don’t believe it is the iPad…and no, the most recent SW update did not resolve the issue.

When I was flying in the back seat of the RV8, the WIFI signal strength was very weak and there were a lot of Foreflight disconnect comparing to when I was flying up front. The iPad was mounded 6 inches away from the WIFI dongle and I got an occasional disconnect. However, when viewing the iPad wifi signal, it indicated the wifi was active but Foreflight just gave up. Maybe Foreflight is more sensitive to the WIFI signal strength.

Thanks for the insight. My Dynon WIFI dongles are about 18” from the iPad and my Stratux is 3-4 feet away which also makes me think it is the Dynon and not the iPad or ForeFlight.

My WiFi isn't working properly too, iPad HDX. I've tried everything possible, even with just one Dongle, but without success. I think it's caused by overload when too much data is being processed and there isn't enough computing power for the USB interface. It's similar to when the mouse pointer jerks on a PC.

You need one for each display as any display can be elected the master and that is where the WiFi then gets used from.

You can not manually control the master (unless you do it with power)

Once a master is up, it should not change unless that display becomes offline. You are not switching between the WiFi dongles.

Hi Chris
Thank you for the explanation. If I understand correctly, I can define the master by the power-up sequence of the HDX devices. So if I turn on the device in the back seat later than the one in the front will provide the WiFi. Is that correct?

I started having Wi-Fi issues when I introduced a second iPad that also has email enabled. I set both iPads to "Low Data Mode" in the skyview Wi-Fi and the issue is 99% solved. I believe the issue was my iPad was asking for an email update over the Skyview WiFi.

I will give it a try, thanks.

Hi team. I am also having trouble with Foreflight and HDX. I've got a stratux installed in my plane and it it rock solid, However, I recently bought the official wifi dongle from Dynon, but I'm having stability issues. Mostly the GPS location crapping out randomly in flight. Wifi dongle is plugged directly into the back of the hdx.

I also see 2 devices on foreflight, Skyview and ADS-B.. I had to turn off GPS on the ADSB source to get things working. I've not seen this in any documentation. Is this normal?

Are you saying the Foreflight worked with Stratux before and now it doesn't?

The wifi signal from the Dynon dongle is not very strong. The iPad needs to be located very close to the HDX unit or the Foreflight will disconnect intermittently. I have an RV8. The Foreflight wifi connection from the rear seat is not very reliable. I had to mount the iPad right next to the front panel less than 6 inches away from the HDX unit.

Yes works great with Stratux... however I get some static in my radios from Stratux.. plus I want a ADSB backup. I cannot believe the dongle is that weak.. it's only 2 feet away! Signal indicates strong on the ipad...

I realize you need ADSB back up but does it have to be on? The Dynon ADSB never failed me before. You can always power on the Stratux when the Dynon fails. I don't believe an ADSB failure was reported in the forum.
