Dynon Pitot Tube Installation

How does one (me) mount the unit to the bottom of the wing of a composite airplane?


I plan on installing it under the pilot side wing outboard of the strake fuel bulkhead of a Velocity XL. I see Dynon offers a Vans RV mounting kit that includes an aluminum “mast base” that the AN 5812 pitot tube is inserted into and then this mast is bolted to the underside of the wing surface with some aluminum plates/ brackets. Then of course there is the two tubes and the wires.

I am sure I can figure out the tubes and wires OK (any suggestions/experience would be helpful) and I could buy the RV installation kit and adapt it to the Velocity however the pitot tube unit is an 5812 pitot tube so there are many other generic mast base kits out there from Aircraft $pruce. Some kits are cheaper than the RV kit Dynon offers but of course you don’t know what you don’t know until you have to whip out the credit card because you have to buy something that you did not know that you needed because it was not obvious that you needed it…

If someone can PLEASE give me some advice/feedback/part numbers/ experience/well wishes on the instal of the Dynon Pitot Tube in a non-RV composite airplane l I would be most appreciative!!!

I Install the Dynon Pitot tube & Controller in an outermost wing inspection panel (not sure if that's available/possible in the Velocity) - its then easy to disconnect the power/ground wires & the 2x tubes, don't understand why so many haven't done that. It's much easier then to work on the whole assembly on a bench than working 'overhead' underneath the wing

HB101 - Velocity does indeed call for pitot installation on the vertical surface under the canard, pilot's side.  This should be accessible from the nose access panel.  The Dynon pitot is designed for vertical installation due to the drain hole, but you can ask them about a horizontal installation.  Just realized the AOA must work in vertical position, so you would need to mount on a horizontal surface. You might look at mounting vertical in the nose forward of the gear doors. A mast kit would be advisable, and can be adjusted to the right angle into the airstream by mounting the mast on a pad of resin/aerosil (or flox).  Easy to do on a glass plane. The mast would mount from the inside.  Another nice piece of hardware to use for the internal tube installation is quick-connect adapters as opposed to a piece of soft tubing as a union.  For about $10, you can buy 1/4" X 3/16" reducing connectors on Amazon.  You would need 2, 1 for for pitot and 1 for AOA. The pitot tube, tubes are 3/16" OD and need to connect to standard 1/4" pitot/static tubing.  These are airtight, reliable and easy to remove/reattach.:
