EDC-10A compass monting

I am mounting the EDC-10A compass inside the wing on a homebuilt supercub. The installation shows the magnetometer inclined at the same angle as my D180. In the cub the panel is about 10 degrees off vertical from the level flight position. Is it really important to mount the compass at the same pitch as the D180? I would have thought the compass should on same attitude as the bottom line of the wing or horizontal.

Thankyou for the fast reply, I'll go get some measuring tools and make sure the compass is at the right angle. Right now the wing is off and it will take a little calculating.

Re: EDC-10A compass mounting

Old thread - but to keep it in the same tome:

How close/far from ferrous metals does the EDC-10A need to be kept to prevent any measurable issues from arising?
I realise this is probably a tricky question for several reasons.

I am building a rag and tube aircraft, so it'll have to go inside the alloy semi-monocoque wing. But the wing has steel parts inside it to support the flaps/ailerons, steel attachment bolts at the strut, a steel mast for the pitot tube boom, flap return springs, steel hinges at control surfaces, and at the wingtip steel screws etc etc.

The fartherest I can probably get is 1m away from any ferrous items (large or small), and that's not the easiest location for maintenance by a LONG SHOT. All maintenance hatches are secured with steel screws.

Can someone please elaborate on how sensitive this thing is?

Far away from ferrous metal as possible is good - however I like to keep it at least 1ft from steel control cables and minimum of 18" from motors, small screws & nuts aren't as important but should be considered.
You could use brass or stainless screws for the hatches too.

If you can show me non-ferrous nut plates, then I have a solution I can use  ;D

Control cables are SS so should be ok, but no guarantees as usual.

Are you requiring these for the inspection covers only ? If so then there are simple solutions to that ;)

BTW - I sometimes use plastic (Nylon?) screws & nuts for mounting the magnetometers.

Re: EDC-10A compass mounting

Yeah that's it - I would install an inspection cover for acess to the EDC-10A.  Obviously the inside is blind so needs some kind of nutplate type arrangement.

Checked the SS control cable, it's as magnetic as anything. Hah, no joy there.

Ok - now for a new question:
The building process I'm going through will require the wings to be sealed shut (with remote compass inside) and transported seperately from the plane to the airport.  From a wiring perspective, it would be easier to modify the D100 harness  cable run which connects to the remote compass with a plug at the wing root.  I presume this is sheilded multicore wire, but I dont have the harness yet.

Would that be a completely inadvisable thing to do?   (cutting the harness and installing a plug in the remote compass wire) :-/

I can't really see any other solutions, except major disassembly of the boot cowling / windscreen / instrument panel at the airport to route and wire up the D100 harness prior to first-flight.

Also, can anyone tell me how many cores there are in that wire... i.e. how many pins at the EDC I presume

There are 4 wires. A connector inline is no issue at all. Even shielding for this wire is not critical, but never a bad idea.

You can always download our install guides if you need more details.

Brilliant - thanks very much.
I have you D100 and D120 install guides printed off. Very useful thanks!
