Dynon 10A Ser.no. 004129
Purchased 2 years ago and periodically powered up and charged its internal battery with no problems.
Now ready to fit it into my Europa panel, I thought I would update the firmware from 2-09-01 to version 5.
Using the lead made up as shown in the installation manual I tried 'detect firmware version'.
Dynon display showed a yellow screen saying 'Loading..' and a warning 'power failure... may require factory service' (**FRIGHTENING**)
Computer failed to establish con with dynon using 2 different 25-9 pin cables, 3 different computers, 3 serial cables, even changing the baud rate to that quoted in the user manual.
The dynon screen froze and a normal picture could only be regained after main power was removed and the internal battery allowed to discharge. :'(
Please help.

Mike,
This situation is indicative of the transmit wire on the EFIS not connecting to the PC for some reason.

The EFIS goes into the yellow screen because the EFIS can hear the PC. But the PC doesn't know this because it can't hear the EFIS.

Check that pin 10 on your EFIS makes it to pin 2 on your D9 connector. Also make sure that pin 5 on the D9 is well grounded to your EFIS. If you're sure that this connection is being made, then it may be your unit. Make sure this connection doesn't go anywhere else as well, since another thing could be loading it down.

Letting the EFIS run down on the yellow screen in this case is fine. But you don't need to try a load to know if your wiring is OK. In the corner of the support program there's a thing that says "COMM: X". If this changes to "found instrument on COM X" then your wiring is working. The EFIS does need to be on and operating normally for this to work.

I will check the wiring again and try a further comm check tomorrow.
Is there anything else I can do before returning the unit to the distributer? Can the internal wiring be disturbed whilst fitting the battery? I have not seen inside as the battery was fitted before I collected the efis?

Mike,
There isn't much else to do. If the unit isn't transmitting serial data on that pin, it's broken. But they are tested before they leave here, and this would be an extraordinarily rare failure. I'd really check your wiring carefully.

Since the unit is two years old, I doubt your distributor will take it back. You'll need to send it to us in the USA for repair. Please contact us on the phone or via email to get an RMA number. I doubt that plugging a battery in could have caused this problem.

Fault confirmed by the dealer here (Bob Howard). He is returning the unit to you for repair. Thanks for your help.
