EGT/CHT Harness lengths

Has anyone else found their harness to be a little short? I ordered the 6 cyl Lycoming harness and with a typical RV-10 Install the leads for one side will be too short.

I will make longer leands and crimp them into new pins and all will be fine, but the added expense and me having to tamper with a beautifully made harness is rather frustrating all for the sakeof a few extra feet of cable. Even if the price a a few dollars more, who would complain?? Its not like I am building an uncommon plane requiring rather long leads either!

So more as feed back for Dynon and Steinair, has anyone else had this problem....... or did I get a short set!

You should have 6' of all the different wires on the EMS harnesses.

Yep I do!

And while I know you can not cater for every possible installation, as someone will always have a longer plane... I would have thought an RV-10 and IO-540 would be a typical install.

I reckon around 8 feet will do it, and if you are interested I will report back when I have made some longer cables.

Even if the price went up a few bucks.........

Good call David - I usually have to make 'adjustments' to the loom to compensate for the 'short' wiring. Dynon I'm very happy to pay for the extra length for the 6 cylinder (RV10) Egt/Cht wiring harness. To keep parts count down it would mean that the Jabby 3300 wires would also be longer, so be it

Stein Air, the harness manufacturer, is good about working with customers that need a longer harness. I think they have you send yours in for modification or as credit towards the custom harness (if yours is still new in bag).

Bit late now......... and as you know we are in Oz so its USD$60 in postage and thats about what the wire is worth...... easier to do it here.

I would suggest....read as HIGHLY RECOMEND, you start ordering longer harnesses for the 6 cyl LYC/TCM harness kits. Like I said most folk will need it and a few dollars more is nothing, so just up the price.

Out of curiosity, how many feet of wire would you guess you'd need for everything to reach?

I will know more this weekend. We are putting the engine in this week and will be running cables and be able to measure it for you.

From my perspective 2 foot extra would give a safe margin.

An extra 2 feet would do it no problem.

Of course you could make the back cylinders shorter .....but that might just be asking for trouble.

I sent mine back to Steinair.  They made me one with the left side wires 9' and the right side 7'.  I'm sure they are plenty long enough now, but I have the engine off the aircraft for painting.

Shipping from AUutrailia is an issue, but Steinair gave me credit for my un-modified 6' harness.  I paid only a $30 upgrade charge for the new one.

My aircraft is a Glasair II-S, 4 cylinder Lycoming.

OK some up to date results!

The dynon EGT and CHT sensor leads are long enough that when you take the shortest path with the harness, they all reach. So a lucky escape but not leaving much spare length.

Maybe an extra foot on the front cylinders would be enough just to give routing options.

Pretty tough thing though.....how long is that piece of string!
