Can the Skyview EMS provide a notification if one electronic mag stops providing tach output? On most dual electronic mag installation if one mag fails the other one compensates so well the engine does not run rough. I am wondering about the E-Mags in particular.

With the E-Mag you only need 1x tach wire connected so then you'll have rpm input regardless of which (if) mag may fail, however if you are thinking of a possible wire break then add a wire for the second E-Mag ;)

I have both tach wires connected and configured to the SkyView EMS. If one mag fails the SkyView seamlessly switches RPM indications to the other mag. With E-Mags there is no noticeable engine roughness, as happens with regular mags, which instantly tells you that one mag has failed.

So with E-Mags, and Dynon's seamless transition from one tach output to the other for RPM indications, it is impossible to tell in flight that one mag has failed which should be a reason to make a precautionary landing.

It may be that the E-Mag may continue to output a tach signal even though it has failed. According to Mike Busch the best place to do a mag check is in the air at cruise and leaned out. You'll notice right away if one has failed. I do a pre flight mag check and a post flight mag check to make sure they are working but I also do inflight mag checks for ignition analysis.

I think the idea of two mags is redundancy. I wouldn't take off with one mag, but I also wouldn't do a precautionary because one failed as the best place to replace/repair it is at your home field not a farmer's field.

I think we are saying the same thing. A precautionary landing would be at an appropriate, not necessarily the nearest, airport. An emergency landing would be at the nearest airport, or in a farmer's field if unable.
