I am helping a friend wire his plane with a full Dynon avionics system.  His engine is a Rotax 912iS with a CAN BUS to be connected to SV-EMS 221 pins 36 and 37.  Is there a way to connect a general purpose type J thermocouple to the EMS 221?  If so, what pins?

Yes, but not on the D37 connector. The "extra" two thermocouples that exist on the -220 are repurposed for CAN and for propeller control units on the -221. You can, however, use the regular D25-based thermocouple inputs as are normally available for EGTs/CHTs on other engines. Refer to the latest installation manual for the pinout details. You basically have 12 channels for EGT/CHT/thermocouples there.

Thanks for that information.
After connecting a general purpose type J thermocouple to the D-Sub 25, can the "CHT" display be changed to something else like "Fuel Temp"?  If yes, is that done using "SENSOR INPUT MAPPING"?
Is there a section in the manual that describes this process?  Page number?
Thanks

Yes, you can change the name via the sensor input mapping setup. Page 7-74 of the installation manual (as of 3/19) starts the description of the general process for changing them.
