Hopefully, someone has done this. I'm swapping out my Garmin 300XL for a GNS 480. I also have a SL 30 and a D10A in the system. I've wired the SL30 to the 480 on the 480 serial Tx1/Rx1 and SL30 RS232. I've also tagged on a serial line from the respective box Tx to a selector switch to send the data for display on the FD180 EFIS Pin 22. I'm not sure if the G 480 will send Radio Nav serial data ?? I"m also asking this over at Garmin. I have wired the 480 serial Tx5 to send GPS Nav data to the FD180 via the EMS Pin 19.
My two questions are:
Does anyone know if the 480 will send Radio/Nav data to the FD 180 via serial?
Can the 480 GPS data be sent to the FD 180 via serial Tx5?

Thanks
John

I believe you need to wire the SL30 directly to the D180 for NAV data. Same for the 480 NAV output. Sounds like you have these already going to a selector switch and properly connected.

Connecting the 480 GPS to the D180 will require an ARINC-429 translator with separate input to the D180.

The GNS480 will send the NAV infos of its internal SL30 through the pin 5 of NAV I/O connector P7. That will work well. Well, not sure how you will change the OBS in this case.

But if I were you, I would purchase an HS34 and connect the GNS480 to the ARINC. You can then also connect the SL30 to HS34 via serial.

With the HS34, you have a CRS rotating knob as well as possibility to change the source of the HSI via a simple knob.

Thanks for the replies.
Jacques, thanks you have opened a window here. There is a "Wiki" that states that it appears the 480 does not send radio nav data. Then connecting the output of P7 pin 5 to my "Radio/Nav" selector should allow me to switch between the 480 and SL30.
I'm planning an upgrade to a SV system and have pre-wired the 429 channels for using the SV ARINC.  Can you confirm that the 480 serial TxD1 or TxD5 should provide GPS Nav data to the FD180 using MAPCOM?
Thanks

This is wrong. I have wired the GNS480 P7 pin 5 to my HS34 serial input and when I switch the HS34 to this input, I see what you can get out of a SL30. That means the VOR/ILS name and the opportunity to use the standby bearings. These items, you cannot get via ARINC.

Then connecting the output of P7 pin 5 to my "Radio/Nav" selector should allow me to switch between the 480 and SL30.
Indeed. The internal SL30 of the GNS480 outputs NAV infos on P7 pin5 and your SL30 also outputs its NAV info on pin 5. You can just switch between the 2 before entering the FD180.

I am myself in the middle of such upgrade. The SV-ARINC-429 is in front of me! I am planning to use TxD5 as it is close to the ARINC pins on GNS480 P5. That leanifies cabling ;) You can still use serial 1 for your SL30 and serial 2 for outputting MAPCOM for your FD180. Table 3-1 of the GNS480 installation manual outlines the different serial outputs configurations.

Thanks Jaques and good luck. I pretty well gutted my stack. Had a sigtronics intercom, old King KMA20 and the 300XL. Getting rid of the King and 300xl allowed me to install the 480 with about a 3/8" gap on the top of the stack. I'm installing the SV Intercom. Its ability to input two Comms and two separate aux inputs eliminated the need for an audio panel for me. I also ore-wired the 4 SV specific cables for the future. Just a  simple SPDT switch to select which Com gets keyed. I feel your pain about wire neatness. Everything is wired just trying to organize the grounds and order of things.
Once again
Thanks
