Hi All
After two very frustrating years I'm finally flying my homebuilt Jabiru J230 home next weekend (long story - home building is interesting!! - never again). My Dynon D100 was purchased 2 years ago (at least - it was just on the market) and needs to be updated - especially so I can access the DI rather than the compass which has been a tad unreliable to say the least. It works OK initially then after any landing declares "remote compass not available". If turn off the power to the instrument then turn on again it seems to be happy.
The aircraft is hangared on a remote country airstrip with no internet access.
So - and please be patient - how EXACTLY do I dowload what I need to do this onto my laptop, in order to take it out to the plane and plug it in.
Please bear in mind that when I learned to fly computers were housed in huge airconditoned rooms and looked like mega reel-to-reel tape recorders - so please explain in very simple terms!
Any help gratefully received
Cheers
Chris

Well, the good news is that if you can post a message here, then you are equipped to deal with an update ;)

Bad news is that the DI relies on the compass - it's just a different representation. If the problem is hardware and not software related, then an update isn't going to help, but the best way to test this is to do the update.

Download the latest firmware (3.0) from here (and read the whole page) - or you can wait few a few more days/weeks until 4.0 is released...

Save it to your laptop or flash disk (if you're using a desktop).

Plug the EFIS into a comm port on your laptop (either directly or via a serial-USB converter if your laptop doesn't have any comm ports - see the instruction manual), and run the program you downloaded.

Oh, and the laptop needs to be a Windows machine. (Don't forget to plug the laptop in, and run the EFIS on external power during the upgrade)

Follow the instructions on screen and sit back and wait - it usually takes me about 30 mins to do the backup and update.

There's a good chance the new firmware will help the compass issue, since we did improve communications between the EFIS and the EDC in the October 2006 software release. This has fixed 99% of the problems. The DG is exactly the same info as the heading tape, so if your heading tape is dropping out, so will the DG.

One thing that is important: Your EDC MUST be connected when you do this update. The software update puts new firmware in the EDC at the same time that it updates the EFIS.

Otherwise, as Etienne mentions, the update is pretty straightforward. As long as you have the file from our website on your PC, you should be just fine. The only other ting to check is that you have a serial port working before you head out. If you are using a USB-serial cable, make sure you have the drivers installed. And once you have the support program installed, starting it up and clicking the "help" button will open up a fairly detailed set of instructions.

Many thanks Etienne and Dynon support.
Support program 3.0 seemed to dowload without a hitch - I'll head off to the aircraft next week, connect eveything up and let you know the outcome!
Thanks again
Cheers
