FloScan 231

I talked with Ray VanWinkel ( Salesman for FloScan) today about buying a Floscan 231 for my D-180.  I had asked Dynon about this before and was led to believe that Dynon does not sell the aviaton rated FloScan 231.  ( I have a gravity feed 0-540)

Mr. VanWinkle did tell me that if you use a 231 it must be the one designed for aviation.   A prior post, by Dynon, suggested that any model 231 would work.  Appartley this is not correct.  (IE: a boat Floscan 231 can not be used)

Mr. VanWinkle told me that he can not sell it to me direct, but I could order through Dynon.  I would like to order this special aviation 231.

Can you sell it to me or contact Mr. VanWinkle, with FloScan, to resolve this matter so I know what to do?

Thanks,

David Weber

Hmm - we know that people have ordered them off the FloScan website before. I'm not sure that there is any difference between the 201B units we source and the ones that go into boats (the same would probably hold true for the 231). I'm guessing it's more about liability and usage than it is about an actual physical difference.

In any case, we don't currently stock the 231 or any fuel flow sensor besides the 201B. We'll be looking into other sensors and options, but we can't make any promises at this point.

Dear Sir:

I am just a confused homebuilder. I have picked up from your site and others that the carburated 0-540 needs the 231. So, since you did not offer them, I called FloScan. They said that they would call you and ask that you sell them.

I was also told that you must use the "aviation" model 231 of the FloScan.

I now wonder how many folks bought 231's and really have the wrong one.

I would like to suggest you might contact Ray with Floscan and see if you can offer the 231. He seemed to imply that I could "special order" from you since he could not sell it OEM.

If you could order it for me, I would appreciate it. Let me know your decision or if you know of a vendor that could get the "aviation" 231 for me.

Thanks,

David

We're in contact with them.

Having the "wrong one" certainly won't impact performance (since you can adjust the K-factor on the EMS) and better not compromise safety (because even in boats, fuel leaks are still a really bad and dangerous thing).

While we figure things out, if you search the following page for "231", you'll find the aviation 231 if you want to get your hands on one quickly.

My guess is to do with max fuel flow.

The 201 is rated at less flow than a -540 can gulp at full power, hence the recommendation for the 231 which can handle 35 gph ?

The 201B is rated up to 60 GPH, but the pressure drop is higher (1.2 psi @ 30 gph, 4.8 psi @ 60 gph) than some would like to see when using a thirstier engine with gravity feed. If you have a fuel injected engine, you're probably less concerned about the pressure drop since you have a fuel pump in the mix.
