I borrowed a 496 to check my Skyview system which is also running a GNS480 and the Skyview itself for navigation. The 496 is set on Serial input 3. If I set the HSI source to the 496 the labeling will correctly show the 496 as well as bearing and distance to the first point of a flight plan but only in text. The HSI needle is not displayed so no cross track error could be detected. If the 496 is switched to one of the pointers, that pointer comes up correctly.
It seems the 496 could not be navigated from as a source and it seems unlikely the autopilot would track it though I did not fly. Is there a way to have the 496 route displayed on the map? Is there a way to have the HSI display the 496 with a needle vice only text? Will the autopilot track the 496 flight plan?
I noticed the map has listings for both the Skyview and the GNS 480 as flight plan sources. Is the flight plan source limited to ARINC devices?
For those wondering why I have a third WAAS GPS source. One potential mission for my plane involves long overwater legs. The 496 can stay powered from it's internal battery for over 6 hours. If my alternator were to fail, I would still be able to remain on course while conserving the aircraft battery and Skyview battery in VMC weather for use at the destination. Naturally neither the autopilot nor the Skyview would be working in this scenario. I would like to have the ability to use it as a normal map/navigation source at other times. Is this possible?
