I will soon be putting a GPS 175 in our plane which has a D180 main unit connected to a D10A secondary efis. I don’t have an HS34, so can I wire the serial output of the GPS 175 to the D180 and get the full HSI and vertical guidance? I’ve seen conflicting information on the output format and comparability of serial vs airinc for that combination.

Serial only carries a subset of the ARINC info, so you'll only have partial functionality. Essentially, lateral guidance is available via the serial, but the vertical information is not carried via serial.
