well....looks like Dynon already took care of this for me in the SV manual. thx dynon..

I assume then, that the pinouts listed in the dynon book take care of everything, GPS, VORs, ILS.. it all communicates via ARINC, correct?

curious. what external annunciators did you guys use, if any, from the 480? I know they are not neccessary since the 480 shows them, is there any added benefit in having an external lamp too.?

YEP!  It really is that easy.  Only other things you really need to hook up are all audio and radio inputs and outputs to/from your audio panel. And of course power/ground. All these are easily determined in your 480 installation manual.

My personal preference was not to use additional annunciators.  Your personal preference may be different.  I haven't found myself wishing I had them either.

Does anyone else do subscriptions for the nav data on the GNS 480 besides Jep??? I ordered my 480 today, and will start installing as soon as it arrives.

Good question for Garmin Technical Support  ;)

Will Garmin still service/update the 480 software?

This is what I got back from them..

"Dear Tom Smith,

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

Although the GNS 480 is no longer a production unit, Garmin does currently offer full product support for the unit.  As far as I know, we do not currently have plans to end support in the foreseeable future.  That does not guarantee support for any specific length of time, but should give a fair indication of the viable use-life of the unit.  I hope this information is helpful.

Best Regards,

Dan

One other question for thous using duel com's (the GNS-480 with a like SL-30) What are you using for a com select panel? Or what can you use?? Just Asking......
Or maybe just a switch to control PTT between the two coms..

I plan to buy a garmin gns 240 audio panel once I start installing my 480.

It really doesn't make much sense to me to put a toggle switch between the 2 comms. Kind of defeats the purpose of the having 2 in the first place. The GNS 240 is about the lowest priced audio panel I have found. I can then have the 480 COMM and Nav, my NAV 2000 nav, my MGL V6 Comm, and Skyview audio alerts all connected to the audio panel.

If you have two COMs, and one Push-To-Talk switch (commonly, on the stick), there must be a mechanism for "gating" which COM transmits when you push the PTT. Else, you'll be transmitting on the two COMs simultaneously, probably inappropriately on a frequency you meant just to monitor.

With the the Dynon Avionics SV-INTERCOM-2S and two COMs, that method is the Single Pole Double Throw (SPDT) switch specified in the SkyView and SV-INTERCOM-2S Installation guides.

If the audio panel you're considering has a method of selecting which COM transmits when you push PTT, then you don't need a switch. But if it doesn't - like the SV-INTERCOM-2S, you'll need to install a switch.
