Has anyone connected a HS34 to a GNS480 without any problems...I have a problem where the MD200-306 seems to be controlled by course knob of HS34 I am using CHNL 5 on the 480 for Airinc output/inputs in Nav mode...

That may make sense. If you have the HS34 hooked up and working, it would nominally drive the course input to the 480. It then generates the signals that drive both our HSI and the Garmin mechanical CDI that you have connected. The OBS knob on the Garmin would be effectively ignored.

Is that what you're seeing?

Yes that is exactly what is happening. If only the airinc output is connected to HS34 then will the md200 also work. I need both units to work...Is this also happening to 430/530 units

Thanks

On the 430 this does not happen. With the HS34 connected via ARINC the HS34 course knob controls the HSI and the 430 course, but the OBS knob on the CDI continues to operate normally in reference to the CDI. However, the OBS knob on the CDI no longer provides course info back to the 430. I am using the MD200-306 with my 430, so it is not a function of the CDI.

Glad to hear that someone else has successfully gotten the 480 to work with the HS34!

Would you please confirm a couple of things for me? I'm getting close to first flight with the Dynon...

- Are the only wires you connected from the 480 to the HS34 the 4 ARINC wires? From the diagram it looks like you could also choose to connect the serial VOR/ILS outputs, but it seems redundant and would take up an extra set of inputs on the HS34.
- What speed setting did you configure the Garmin for?
- Are you also driving an autopilot with the Garmin output? If so, what kind?

Thanks,

However, the OBS knob on the CDI no longer provides course info back to the 430.

That's what my 530 does when I have the external CDI on the MAIN outputs and an EHSI on the ARIC 429 in/outputs (ARINC 429 overrides the resolver on the CDI)

Mel and flyer, try this (the way I have my 530 installed in my Aztec).

The 530/430 (not sure about the 480) has an analog VOR/LOC only output that I have connected to a mechanical OBS/CDI (KNI-520) and I have the ARINC 429 output going to my EHSI (Sandel).

If the HSI fails, I have not lost the VOR/LOC/GS information (it's displayed full time on the KNI-520 and I can get the GPS CDI indication on the face of the 530 (I would however loose WAAS vertical GPS guidance).

Instead of having both the CDI and EHSI showing the same thing, it's really nice to have the external CDIs capable of displaying different information i.e.; GPS on HSI and VOR on CDI. Even when I shoot an ILS with the EHSI, I can monitor the LOC/GS on the KNI-520 before I switch the EHSI from GPS to LOC/GS.

The autopilot is connected to the MAIN analog output and always follows what is displayed on the EHSI. I decided against interfacing the stand-alone VOR/LOC only CDI/OBS to the autopilot at all.

Hi Phantom: 4 wires going from the 480 to hs34
429 out2A and 429 out2B to 23,11 on hs34 you don not need the serial connection.
Speeds are Low on the 480 you do need to split the wires going to hs34 airinc inputs. I split the 429 airinc out2a and 2b
to 429 Rx 1A and 1B will test this on Saturday otherwise you will only be able to display GPS or VOR on the HSI...
I have a Trutrak Digiflight 2 VSG using airinc 429 out 1A and 1B with works great...

That's what I thought - it wasn't crystal clear. So the OBS knob on the 480 determines which signal (GPS or VOR/ILS) is sent across the ARINC data lines?

Speeds are Low on the 480

Low = 4800 or 2400? I thought I read that the TruTrack required 4800 and that the Dynon worked with about anything?

Ok, now I'm confused again - are you saying that the ARINC always transmits BOTH the GPS and the VOR signals, and that you then select at the HS34?

Fabulous - I have a VSGV so our setups are essentially identical. Hopefully we will quickly be able to confirm GNS 480 operation for the Dynon folks - but sadly they announced yesterday the retirement of the 480. Now people will have to spend upwards of $30k to get the features that the 480 offers...

Phantom: On the 480 I used airinc out1A and 1B  for the Trutrak RS232 pin 22 on the 480 pin 17 on the trutrak
and Mapcom and 9600.  Pins 4,24 on the 480 for 429 out1A and 1B to pins 14,15 on the trutrak speed on 480 set to low
Baud Rate 9600 on 480 and 9600 on trutrak for serial output...The trutrak flies the plane better then I can...amazing

Thanks Bill. Phantoms are what I once flew - I'm "Bill" also.

I had heard a rumor that 9600 might not provide all information and that it might be necessary to set everything to 4800 - but if it is working ok for you then I will set that speed also.

Can't wait to fly a practice GPSS approach to minimums and watch the 480 execute a Missed Approach to Holding!

Cheers,

Bill
