A customer of ours, the NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center, is developing GPAS technology for general aviation. Their development platform using an android device with a high resolution terrain map, a two-axis autopilot and some advanced predictive and manoeuvring software.

Ultimately their intent is that all of this would reside in an EFIS system with the objective of minimizing CFIT accidents. NASA sees applications in UAV and military jets as well. The F16 manoeuvering profile is to pull up at 8 Gs and is easier to implement than with lower performance aircraft which need to perform chandelles or terrain following.

An obvious extension would be a gear warning system for land and amphib aircraft.

It would be nice if Dynon could keep on top of this research with the intent of providing such a system (software) at some point.
