GPS "issues" - SOLVED

I've JUST completed my Skyview installation and noticed a couple of things:

1). Unless I start the 496 up and have it ready to navigate BEFORE powering up the Skyview,  the Skyview does not receive the GPS data.  Only the receive line is connected on serial port 1.

2) With Synthetic vision on,  terrain, etc. only extends to a certain point on the PFD and then non-syn is displayed.  

Are these both expected behavior?

1 isn't, but 2 is. Synvis is drawn out, depending on where you are in the world, a max of 30 miles, and less at you get away from the equator.

What are your 496 and SkyView settings. Check that the data rate under the advanced nmea setup on the 496 isn't set to fast. Also, are you running SkyView 3.1?

Thanks for the response. 496 is set for Aviation In, NMEA & VHF Out 9600 Baud.

You are hitting the NAVSRC button under the PFD to cycle through the available nav sources, correct?

Yes. I have it set as the Navsrc by default. All I have to do is power the Skyview down, back up and it will sync.

So what do you see in the HSI status area when you use the navsrc button? Also, have you confirmed that the data rate under the advanced nmea setup on the 496 is set to "normal", and not "fast"?

I haven't done a lot of experimenting but I was testing my AP and the NAV source wasn't available, just HDG and TRK. A little while later NAV was available. The GPS495 is my only NAV device other than the SV GPS. I'll pay attention next time I'm up to see when the NAV appears.

On the same note I noticed that my GTX327 isn't showing pressure altitude. I thought maybe I cut too many wires when I disconnected the SV audio wires from my intercom. Then at least once since I first noticed it was there. I haven't had any complaints from tower although at least once they asked to confirm my altitude. I'll pay attention to that also.

In my case the SV come on with the master and the GPS comes on with the avionics master - after start.

I see no data. If I go in to the setup page and check the status of the serial port it shows no data transmission.

If I power cycle the Skyview, it almost always syncs up with the GPS and everything looks normal.

NMEA is set to Normal.

Do you happen to have it connected to serial port 1 or 2? Also, what specific version of firmware are you running?

GPS is on Serial port 1.  Firmware is 3.1.1

It certainly seems like a software bug as it is somewhat intermittent and can always be eventually cleared by power cycling the Skyview.

Except for VERY brief pauses in updates on the screen, it never loses sync once established.

Pilot error. The Skyview receives data when the GPS has established it's location. On a cold start that can take a while, clearly I'm too impatient.
