GPX flight plan import

After upgrading to 3.1, I wanted to import a flight plan created with Skydemon saved as a GPX-file. When I load the file in Skyview only the name of the destination airport appears on the route list. All intermediate waypoints are missing and so is information about distance and course.

Has anyone successfully tested importing a flight plan?

I have loaded a number of flight plans from GPX files and it works just fine for me. All intermediate points are listed and distances are there. Perhaps there is something going wrong when you are saving the file.

I have been using the flight planning software AOPA provides it's members, and have had consistent results with it.

Keep looking into it, the function is really useful and easy once you get the hang of it. I have over a dozen flight plans on my USB stick, some for testing and some for routine flight I take to visit family.

Sounds like there might be a quirk in Skydemon. Anyone else that have tried to export GPX-files from Skydemon til Skyview?

Hello Dynon,

I have the same problem with importing *.GPX files created by Skydemon.

Because I hate it to work every time with different workarrounds I contacted the programmer of Skydemon and described the problem. His answer is: "We believe that we’re currently exporting in the correct GPX format as per its documentation..."

Dynon, could you check if you use the right or a compatible *.GPX version in SV?

Do you need a *.GPX file created by Skydemon?

Thank you!

When parsing GPX files, SkyView looks uses the first 99 route points (<rtept> tags)
within the first route (<rte> tag) in the GPX file. All other data is ignored.

You can crack open a GPX file in a text editor to see what's going on - we'd be happy to look at a SkyDemon generated GPX file if you can send one along.

I looked at the Skydemon examples and unfortunately found a couple problems.

1) There is a bug in the parsing which caused the files to fail to load.  The bug can be worked around by removing the lines with the <elev> tag.  This must be done by hand in a text editor as 2 skydemon users have reported that it is not possible to suppress the line in the software.  This will be fixed in the next release.

2) The waypoints are not populated in the way we expect which will cause us to see a description instead of an ICAO identifier.  This will not prevent the waypoints from being loaded, but will prevent the use of the INFO button to look the waypoint up in the aviation database.

It may not have the data within the GPX file in the exact same format as SkyView needs to recognize it. What program did you use to create the file that you were converting to GPX? What format did it output? Can you send us the GPX file you ended up with?

After having installed 3.2, I imported a flight plan created and saved as a GPX file in SkyDemon. The flight plan comes up in SkyView with all the correct waypoint names, bearings and distances. Thanks for the fix.
