Grand Canyon SFRA

Like a novice, I left my Grand Canyon chart at home when i took a friend flying a few days ago, so we couldn't go over the canyon itself because we didn't have the corridor info with which to navigate.

Any chance of adding some of the details from that (never-changing) chart to the airspace over the canyon?

I flew over the Grand Canyon by taking the waypoints off of the online chart from skyvector, writing down the GPS coordinates, and then entering those into the SkyView as user waypoints. I connected the dots into a flight plan, and went flying along the chart established areas. This is my most memorable flight so far. All alone over the Canyon, on autopilot, enjoying the view.

It is a beautiful flight, and I've done it before...I just goofed up and left the chart back home so I couldn't navigate properly, and I didn't have any access to an electronic chart (in the air) when we realized it. Next time I'll make sure it's in the plane AND enter the data into SV, just thought it would be a nice addition to the database.

Does bring up the question about other SFRAs, though, and if it would be possible to have Dynon add them. I know there was a question about the DC SFRA (with which I'm unfamiliar) along the same lines...

I solved that problem by adding user waypoints at each end of each corridor and named them for north and south. Now when I want to fly the canyon I just add the waypoints to my flight plan.

So the SkyView map shows all the corridors already. Check out the image attached. The data is already in the FAA's database and we've shown it for years. Ultimately, it just a bunch of restricted airspaces, with some areas ending at 10,000 and others ending at 14,500. Is there something that is not acceptable about this presentation?

The DC SFRA is actually the reverse- it's in the FAA's database and TFR's broadcast on ADS-B and people have been asking us to hide it, not show it.

If someone wants to make up a set of waypoints that make flying the corridors easier, you can make those, name them, and export them and upload them here to share with all.

Aha! Yes, that would work...I just misinterpreted what I was seeing (and what I remembered from the chart)...I guess I didn't look closely enough at all the airspace info, probably because I just remembered big purplish sections marked off on the paper chart.

Thanks! Next time, I'll pay closer attention (but it was a fun flight anyway, and we were having fun bombing around northern AZ ).

wow. this looks like another feature preview. the detail looks better than what we have now. the "terrain" button hasn't been released yet, i dont think.

The Terrain in that image is the same as it is now and has always been. We're that awesome Check out this post from 3.5 years ago:

There are some 3D lighting improvements that do make everything look a bit better though.

The "TERRAIN" button has been there since 5.0, assuming you have ADS-B. That's the button you use to change from just TERRAIN to TERRAIN+WX or just WX. If you don't have ADS-B it's just blank.

We'll have plenty of other neat things in this release, they just aren't in that picture

I have the Pocket FMS mapping software and I dont see any of the GC Airspace as depicted in this thread. Is that the reason? Or is it a setting thing. I do see other airspaces around airports and such, I am heading to that big ole hole in the ground in two weeks and the airspace depiction on the SV would be great.

There is a good chance that data is not in PocketFMS data. All the images we show come from the FAA data, which is free in the USA and has a lot more data. Is there a reason you are using PocketFMS here in the USA?

Yep, I live in Ontario. Are you saying that if I to a trip to the US I should take my Pocket data out and use the Dynon free supplied data? Is that better for the US?

Yep - the Dynon-provided US data is the best you can get in the US. You can swap databases back and forth as often as you'd like.
