gtn650 coupled to SV Autopilot

I have started to get my IFR rating back after ten years. I have recently put a GTN650 into my panel and love the way it compliments the SV and autopilot. I have gotten all the functions to work except one. I can't seem to get the GTN to drive the autopilot to fly the full procedure approach (precision or non precision " hockey stick"). I can intercept, it change over from heading mode to VLOC and GPS to VLOC, but it will not fly the hockey stick without me changing the 'course' bug. Am I doing something wrong here?

Generically, when in GPS mode, the AP will center the needle, which generally should follow the flight plan line on the GTN, including any procedure turns or other maneuvers that are depicted. Any chance you might be able to shoot a video of what you're seeing that shows both the SkyView and GTN screens? You could post that here or email it to support at dynonavionics dot com.

Well, now I am really confused. How can I keep the GTN on GPS mode if it is supposed to be feeding the A/P an ILS localizer and glide scope signal to fly the final approach. Am I switching over from GPS mode to VLOC mode too soon? The GTN switches over to VLOC.automatically when in GPS mode, but what about on heading mode vectoring to the FAF outbound?

Ok, to be more specific. I am practicing for my IFR check ride which usually comprises of a take-off to a VOR hold, transition to a non precision VOR procedure approach for the miss then to the beacon outbound for an ILS full procedure approach for a landing. Not your typical IFR cross country to an approach via GPS flight plan. So, if I am using heading bug and A/P to get to the FAF fix outbound, do I transition to the GPS autopilot control first to shoot the FAF outbound 'hockey stick' then transition to the VLOC at or near the FAF inbound? If so, is this really a precision (or non precision) approach if I am using a GPS and not the VOR/ILS for guidance for part of the approach? Looked for utube videos but couldn't find any for this circumstance.

If you manually select the GTN-650 mode instead of letting it automatically shift from GPS to ILS/LOC, you should solve your problem. This is a configuration setting.

There as as many ways to manage the transition from GPS to VOR (ILS and LOC approach) as there are pilots. I tend to load the ILS approach and select the IAF, fly GPS to the IAF, verify I am receiving the ILS (the 650 will automatically put the ILS freq in the standby VOR receiver), then shift the HSI to the 650 ILS/LOC input.

Make sure the HSI has gone from magenta to green and fly the approach. For the missed approach revert back to the GTN-650 GPS as it will tell you the turn and where to go.

The SkyView moving map provides superb situation awareness and while not certified for IFR, sure does come in handy.
