HDX 10" Sticky Buttons

I have 2 Skyview HDX 10" screens in my RV-7A and both, though especially the left one, is really slow in registering when I push one of the buttons on the bezel. Sometimes it will register it when I click it again and flash the screen I want and then cancel it out and sometimes it takes a few pushes for it to open what I want. Very frustrating! Even sitting in the hangar when I update the database the 7&8 buttons, one or both, won't hold long enough to go into the menu system for a few minutes. It's been doing this since shortly after I had them installed. Can anyone help me with a fix?

Probably needs a cleaning under the buttons/membrane. Unfortunately, I believe it voids the warranty if you attempt that yourself. Probably best if you ask Dynon that question.

Thanks, I will. I thought maybe the contacts could be cleaned but not sure how to get to it.

I know how because I've done it on all manner of equipment, including avionics. But I'm pretty sure Dynon doesn't want users doing that

Agree, & if you did mess with it then I’d suggest the ‘fixed price’ repair most likely will not apply -could be expensive territory.

I know of a situation where the G company would not even touch the unit or replace a memory battery for the GNS 480 - due to that the owner searched the internet & found a video of battery type/part number & replaced it himself - I believe Dynon would not do that with Legacy units while parts are still available.

So, I did contact Dynon and the response was to spray the buttons with contact cleaner. I wrote back asking aren't they leak proof? How do I spray them if I can't get fluid to the buttons?

I think it's more like spill proof, or leak resistant. Contact cleaner under pressure, especially with a nozzle, might get in there and do the trick. Just make sure you allow enough time for it to completely dry before powering up the equipment again.

I have the same or similar issue. Have a look at this thread

I never got advised of the serial numbers of those screens affected and have just put up with it but it's very frustrating.

My serial numbers are SN12892 and SN12893. If they are close to these numbers perhaps that's the problem.

I just spoke to tech support and he recommended that i send it in and not use contact cleaner on it.
Told me that the repair could possibly be free depending on unit age and serial no.

I would not use contact cleaner if Dynon recommends against it. But I've been using it on avionics for 45 years, and I've never seen it make a problem worse unless it was used improperly, used in the wrong place, or if the wrong product was used. Not saying it isn't possible, mind you. I've just never seen it happen.

He said they had some bad keypads and that they likely would not charge me to change it out. I just have to bite the bullet and take it out of my plane. He said normally theres a 650 dollar charge.

Thanks - you prompted me to do something about it so I contacted them myself just after I saw your message and got an almost immediate reply from Don Jones who said

"we have a redesigned button board to resolve that for you. They need to come in for repair though" Sounds like I had a couple of the defect units.

It will mean they have to come out of the aircraft and be sent back, although I suppose this is the right time of year to do that with the weather we're having at the moment.

I don't know why I hadn't contacted them before.

Just a follow-up. I sent my HDx display back to Dynon to get the keypad replaced. No questions asked they replaced the keypad free of charge and paid for shipping back to me. It cost me about 3 weeks of downtime and $180 (UPS 2 day and insurance) to ship it to Dynon.
Ive had two issues since installing my Dynon system, this keypad button issue and my Dynon radio died on me last year. Both times i feel like they've been fair with me. Thank you Dynon for excellent support.

Thanks for the update. I’ve found Dynon fairly good when I’ve dealt with them via their support desk. I’ve yet to send mine back but I will get in and do it as it’s winter here and my grass runway airfield is less than usable at the moment. So a perfect time to do it.

Well I bit the bullet as the weather in the UK had been dire and thought it was the best time to send them back to Dynon. Spoke to Dynon Support who were very helpful and responsive and raised an RMA for the repair. Sent them back by UPS on 2nd Feb which cost £150 (about $190) and received them back on 15th Feb. Absolutely excellent service and they covered the repair and return postage under warranty. I've re-installed the screens and the difference in button response is like night and day. I really should have done this sooner as they were very difficult to operate before. So thanks to Dynon for the excellent customer service and a very quick turn round however the weather is still crap here so will need to wait a little longer before trying them in flight.

Wow. The exchange rate sure has changed since when I lived over there. Glad things worked out so well for you.
